I just noticed that the "free" Navigon app for Australia/NZ popped up again as available for my Galaxy Note, so I installed it from the market.

The market version isn't the latest version, but it's still better (IMO) than Google-Nav. See if it's available for you if you want to get it.

Now, if you want the new version (v4.1), it's only "officially" available to the Australians, which I'm sure is just an oversight. So, if you'd like the latest one rather than the slightly older market version, you need to do the following.

Download and install Market Enabler from: http://code.google.com/p/market-enabler/downloads/detail?name=MarketEnabler_v3113.apk

Open it, find the entry for Telstra (AU), long-press on it and tell it to set it.

Go into the phone settings, then into Applications, locate the Samsung Apps entry, select it and then select "Clear data".

Now run the Samsung Apps application, and once you're in, you should be able to search for "Navigon" and download the current version.

If you reboot the phone, it'll revert back to thinking it's an NZ phone again and all will be well. You can also uninstall the Market Enabler app (all it does is set the MCC/MNC locale codes that the phone would usually read from the SIM artificially)

Some Samsung units will come with the app installed by default, some won't. I like it.

Just a note, that Market Enabler needs root IIRC.

Also, I can't find any "free" versions on my unrooted S3 :(

I got it for my S3 a while ago, I had to search for 'Samsung Navigon' I think

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

I've found it on my S3 but when I log in using my main account it complained - something about that email cannot be used for this country. Can't figure out a way of changing the email address used for that login.

EDIT: Interesting... in order to do this I had to create a new Samsung Account through account.samsung.com. That's the only way I found so I can create an "Australian" account. If I do that on my phone it will alway be an NZ account, which is why I couldn't grab Navigon.

I purchased my SGS while in australia (XSA) a year or so ago. And had the issue I couldn't active/update navigon from NZ. Was in the default apps, but knew it required an update. But would fail. Would not appear on the market, and any of the full ones would say not valid for my device.

Enter my visit back in Feb.. chucked in my Aus data SIM I got the previous november, and away it went. May also occur if you have one yourself on roaming mode ;) but can't confirm as my SIM has expired now.

Agreed, and it will only get better I imagine as the Gmaps vs Apple maps technology battle takes over

I have sygic installed but never use it, google is just so easy to use, and the data usage is negligible at worst
