I did see an earlier thread on this topic but there was no followup.

I picked up a packet of 15 tags of assorted sizes from here

http://www.tagstand.com/collections/nfc-kits/products/nfc-hobbyist-starter-kit-15-stickers

for $15.95 plus shipping to the US. Then had my daughter stick them in an envelope and send to me.

Anyway I have been playing around with them using NFC Task Launcher.

I haven't done much but so far I have put one in my car dock and when I put my GN in the dock it fires up Car Home.

And I have one on my BT speakers at home and when placed on the speaker, it turns on BT, connects to the speakers and then fires up Google Music.  To get the phone to connect to the speakers I had to use Bluetotth Auto Connect from the Play Store. That app connects to the last BT device connected which wasn't what I wanted since that is normally the head unit in the card (phone and music) But the author kindly changed the app so that you could set which BT device to connect to when BT is turned on and keep it to that device.

I now have a further 13 tags to play with. Now looking for applications to use it  usefully.

I am thinking washable tags sewed into the jeans pocket would be quite useful...

For anybody wanting to buy their own tags just get them from ali express - you can get them for around US 80c each with free shipping, and down to around US 20c if you want 100 or so.

I've been playing with a number of tags for a few projects, I just haven't yet come across a small round tag that supports NDEF locking (so the tag can't be deleted and rewritten)

Haven't looked into the NFC applications too closely yet. But I have a 'Home' scene and a 'Work' scene set on my HTC One X. Would it be possible to have a tag on my desk at work so that when I arrive and set my phone down it changes to 'work' and likewise when I reach home revert back to 'home'? The thing being the switch over normally requires going into Settings-> Personalise -> Scenes and then selecting the relevant one. So I guess what I'm asking is how complicated can the instruction set be?

I am not sure what NDEF locking means but this tag apparently can be made read only if that is the same as not being able to be deleted or rewritten

I have one on the fridge at home, we usually just put the phones into flight mode to save battery at night so it toggles flight mode on off at night and on in the morning.

I have one at the Gym where I take a spin class, that puts the phone into flight mode, turns the screen timeout on for 10 minutes and brings up Poweramp for the class.

Yip that's pretty much what a lot of people are doing. You can also enable/disable WiFi, data etc.

NDEF is the term for the data field on that the card that you're writing to. The ones you have are lockable, which means after you've written data to them they can be flagged read only. Without this a tag can simply be rewritten or deleted by anybody else.

I now have one in my wallet and when my wife calls and I can't call her back readily, I wave the phone over my wallet which then sends her a SMS saying I'm in a meeting :-)

Can they be set to that a certain action continues while the tag is in range only?

Could I have have on on a certain spot on my desk that makes my phone silent, but as soon as I take my phone away from the tag the sound turns on again?

You could use variations on this to enable a divert, out of office, or busy message as above
