Got an ASUS tablet and after unpacking was offered a 4.2 update. Noticed the user profiles, so a couple of questions:

- anyone using it?
- when creating the new profile, does it have access to apps already installed? Or do we have to install all apps for the new user?

Yes, but using it for a kid is almost "impossible". A new profile needs a Gmail account. You can't create an account for kids under 13 years old. So it defeats the purpose of using it for separate parental control really. Of course you could just lie in the signup form and put your kid over 13 years old. But then if they decide to keep using the account later it may bring complications when trying to authenticate people.

Google should have "kids accounts" linked to an adult account to allow for this kind of scenarios.

They have. It is in 4.3....

I have had profiles on the n7 for ages but it didn't seem to be well implemented so didn't use it for our 2 yet old. Profiles in 4.3 is completely different and much easier to set up.

Note that "kids accounts" I am talking about is a Google Mail account type - it's different from "User Profiles" in Android.

Yes. The way profiles are implemented in 4.3 is different. You have multiple profiles under one account.

As an aside under 13 year olds can have a Gmail account in Google apps as long as you disable Google+
