This morning my phone battery has dropped from 100% to 85% overnight, while in airplane mode. I poked around and got this information out of the OS and BetterBatteryStats. It looks like nlpwakelock is using the battery - NLP is network location provider, a google service. It doesn't do it every night.

I've turned off location tracking/history in google maps, and based on a bit of googling and found the play store can cause issues, so I uninstalled updates and it's back to an earlier version. I've heard of an app called "greenify" which may mitigate the problem, but I'd rather figure it out.

Anyone else had this issue and solved it?

Interesting, I usually only lose about 4% over night, 15% seems a lot, especially in airplane mode. Might have a dig on my phone and see... which firmware are you using?

I use Greenify its very good.

Have you switched off Google Now? it was hogging battery life for me as it tries to locate you so iot can send updates

With problems with the HTC One camera I bought a Galaxy S4. My battery is the same. The HTC One I can get 2 days out of it but with the galaxy s4 exactly the same use and equivalent settings struggle to get a day out of it.
The top screenshot is identical to mine. This thing really sucks the battey dry

I'm using the latest stock firmware, build JDQ39.i9505XXUBMG4.

Jeff, how do you disable google now? I find it a bit weird all those reminders linked to searches I did on the PC. I'd uninstall it if I could, but disabling is a good start.

Gilco, on my first charge I got 2.5 days out of the battery, though I did have wifi and mobile data switched off most of the time - I just don't need it all the time. Most days I get down to 50%, which includes a couple of hours of streaming music across wifi. If you're struggling to get a day out of it it's likely usage patterns or some problem that needs to be addressed.

yes I know that and expected less. In saying that the HTC One still lasted another day after doing the same.
Would expect a day out of the phone with light use. Had the phone off charger fully charged at 9am and now at 11am it is down to 90%. GPS,wifi, bluetooth and sync all off and battery saver.
turned on.
hTC One off charger 7am wifi on sync on bluetooth off, gps on and been checking messages and 15 minutes reading kindle and now 11am 99% battery left.

yes I honestly realise that. Just used the HTC One as comparrison. This S4 has brighter screen better camera and smoother operation. However it shouldnt be unreasonable to expect a day out of it with battery saver on, gps off, sync off no sim card so no calls and just check weather and gmail once each hour by opening app doing refresh and then turning phone off.

Go to google search (search bar)

open settings
switch off google now

it will make a big difference to deep sleep.

Ive been using mine constantly for web & email for the last 3 hours over wifi with everything on and its used about 11%. In the 3 hours prior with minimal use but everything on still it used about 2%.

The S4 has as good if not better battery life mostly due to battery size.

Battery life comes up all the time and its generally the apps that are running when you get your phone or new ones that sync a lot, facebook is one and email another.

You don't need to switch off sync just go through your apps and switch the unimportant ones to manual update.

I thought you meant "google it yourself", but when I found the instructions they were the same as yours! Turned it off, along with location services, may turn them back on if everything goes ok.

I've only used 8% of my battery since 8am, I've listened to music, checked facebook a few times, and messed around with it a bit.

yes forgot about location services bujt yuou need them when using maps or navigation.

I just changed batteries and whilst I only had 1 hour 57 minutes on screen time I had 2 days and 11 hours on time and 27% battery life left so thats pretty good.
