I'm somewhat confused. Was previously using a Galaxy SII and now a Galaxy SIII, both Android 4.1.2. Using the stock voice recording app - on the SII, it recorded .4ma files, which appeared to be understood by a variety of other media players. On the SIII, it is recording .3ga files, which nothing much else seems to like without some sort of conversion.

Is this other people's experience and if true, whats a good converter for .3ga files? I've read that it's possible to just rename them to .mp3, but not everything seems to think that they actually are.

Renaming them doesn't do anything they are still 3GA file format container with some kind of encoded audio stream inside.

You should be able to use VLC to convert:

1: Open VLC
2: Select the "Media" file menu
3: Select the "Convert/Save" option
4: Add your 3ga files. then select the "Convert/Save" button
5: Choose your destination and output format
