Im hoping someone here can help.
I have a Telecom branded Huawei Ascend y300 that i want to use on 2 degrees network.
For six months i had no trouble, and then i sent the phone back to get repaired (It was then replaced).
Now i cant get a 2 degrees signal on it accept in a few areas of town. Definitely not at my house or work. ("no network available"
The sim works great everywhere on my old samsung s5 (with full bars) so im assuming the sims fine.
The phone works if i put in a telecom sim, but not a 'skinny' one (i thought they were one in the same?)
The obvious answer is just to switch to Telecom, but i use the 2 degrees $19 combo to call and text family in australia, and telecom dont have a deal as good.
I called 'telegistics' who fixed/replaced the phone, and as far as they are concerned, if the phone works with telecom sim, then its not faulty. Which is kind of fair enough, but a its a real pain.
Any help would be appreciated.

It's a phone designed for Telecom, not 2degrees. If you shoved a Telecom sim in it it'll work fine. Skinny have a better deal than 2degrees and the Telecom network is far superior.

The Y300 is also sold as locked to Telecom.

I think that Skinny's prepay plans are best bang for your 16 bucks at present..

I would be surprised if the Telecom supplied Y300 is locked as it is still the same $199 that it was launched with back in April before they started to lock budget fones..

Edit. Looks like it has gone down to $99 so I guess it's a end of line fire sale but unlikely to be locked..

Given it does work in a few areas, this is unlikely.

More likely it's looking for 3G signal on 850MHz or 2100MHz, and picking up the 2100MHz infill sites closer to the town.

As others have noted, it'll more than likely work 100% on a Telecom or Skinny SIM.

Excuse me the Y300 is not sim locked to telecom the OP has already said that he has tried this phone with a 2 degrees sim. As Skinny uses a different network code than telecom the Y300 if sim locked would not work on Skinny unless sim unlocked.

The Y300 is not locked - at present there are only 2 devices have been released on Telecom that are: Samsung E3210B and Telecom T4010. And even then, it isn't all of them, only some of them.

The phone hasn't been set to 3G only has it? Can you check to see if GSM is enabled?

Various replies indicated Telecom/Skinny have a better deal. But surely there isn't enough information to confidently give that reply? The deals are different, and each has its advantages.

Skinny: $16/month. Calls/texts to Australia are included only until the end of January. Nothing carries over.

2d: $19/month. Calls/texts to Australia are included permanently. Unused minutes carry over for up to a year.

If someone makes regular calls and texts across the ditch and has overall usage best fitting a prepaid package, it is probably worth $3 a month to have Australia in the combo permanently and have carryover minutes. For all we know they could have hundreds of accumulated unused minutes from past months they are planning use on additional calling to Australia over the holiday season.

The comments advocating particular mobile service companies on this site (and it's most noticeable for Telecom) can be a little overzealous at times.

I dont think its locked, as i do get very limited signal in some areas.
I agree Skinnys $16 deal is great, but not even skinny sim works.
Telecoms deals are ok, but not for calling Australian mobiles.
Would 'rooting' the phone make a difference?

Skinny is a subsidiary of Telecom and uses the same XT mobile network

One of three things is happening.

1) The phone is set to only receive a 3G signal, and most of the time you don't get it. (probable)

2) The phone is broken. (possible)

3) The phone is a different model and doesn't support the bands you receive (unlikely)
