...I know other people on Android phones who don't have these ridiculous ones. no idea why mine is different. how do I get more normal ones?

didn't see anything useful in the app store/play store/etc.

they look like custom emoticons what phone are you using and are you on stock SMS app

You generally can't disable the android emoticons in the default SMS app (they don't look exactly like the picture posted, but pretty similar). One option would be to use a 3rd party SMS app like Hancent which does allow you to disable smileys.

yep, just whatever messaging function came with my Galaxy Ace 2 is what I'm using. didn't even know there were apps for that.

is it not possible to use Root Browser or something to replace the emoticons, I have to use another app? (does the app simply change the default, so I still go to 'messaging', but a different program loads?

the phone can realy lag like a bitch some times, so I'd prefer to just delete/replace these images if I can, unless an SMS app is low on memory usage.

If you want you can switch to Google Hangouts or one of the other 3rd party SMS apps. That's the only solution I see.

No, editing the emoticons out of the standard app is probably beyond the standard user - you would have to go into the apk, change the PNGs, then recompile the APK and push it to the system via adb.

It's much easier to use a 3rd party SMS app, which you can set to default.

Sliding Messaging is my go to SMS app, truly great and has a nicer emoticons set. If you get a lot of pixt then Sliding Messaging may not be the best option (I have to use stock app to retrieve these, but just hardly get any anyways so little bother for me). It has rich notifications, which is an absolute must for me.
