As per http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=15666.

Lenovo, which in 2005 acquired IBM’s PC business and its legendary PC brand, will now acquire world-renowned Motorola Mobility, including the MOTOROLA brand and Motorola Mobility's portfolio of innovative smartphones like the Moto X and Moto G and the DROID Ultra series. In addition to current products, Lenovo will take ownership of the future Motorola Mobility product roadmap.

Google will maintain ownership of the vast majority of the Motorola Mobility patent portfolio, including current patent applications and invention disclosures. As part of its ongoing relationship with Google, Lenovo will receive a license to this rich portfolio of patents and other intellectual property. Additionally Lenovo will receive over 2,000 patent assets, as well as the Motorola Mobility brand and trademark portfolio.

Lenovo is spending well, this plus the $US2 billion for the IBM x86 Server business. Now they just have to sort their AsiaPac logistics out.

That's a $7 billion hit/loss for Google. Motorola patents are not worth $7 billion.

Do whatever you want to do man.

There is a lot of FUD around this - they sold another part of motorola off for a couple of billion earlier as well.

And who knows what the worth of those patents is/was/is recorded as - I personally haven't checked their last set of financial reports.

Not saying you are wrong - just this isn't just a buy for 12 sell for 3 type thing..

Also: WTF? Moto G is awesome - I am very nervous about Lenovo owning Motorola.

So presumably this will mean that any future Motorola phones will be take months for warranty repairs ala all of Lenovo's other products?

Shame, my next device was going to be a Motorola given how impressed I've been by the current models, this puts a shadow on it.

I am not sure what "fear, uncertainty, doubt" there is with these sales/purchases.

Looks like Google are keeping some of the production going internally, including the modular phone idea;

Sad to see the carcass of a once great tech innovator being scavenged over

Lenovo have done OK with the IBM desktop/laptop division purchase, I really don't see why they would not do well with this.

Because they have no history in the mobile space - at all?

My workmate has had a Lenovo Android phone from China for the past year.  It's very nice, if rather weighty, and they had 13% market share in China

They've made some phones

Seriously considered the K900 after my Razr I got stolen, got insane battery life and good performance out of that Atom powered android phone.

Lenovo do produce smartphones called  Zenfone.  Fairly cheap  4 ~ 6 inch displays.

Zenfone
