Hello everyone.

So, I really like my physical keyboards, and although I don't completely hate touchscreen keyboards they aren't my preference.
It is a sad day as my trusty old Xperia X10 Mini is finally on its last legs (it's so bad now it sometimes doesn't even charge) so I am in need of a need of a new QWERTY keyboard phone.

However, a big problem is that apparently in this country there isn't a single retailer that carries decent QWERTY keyboard phones, despite the fact there are still a few recent models kicking around in other countries.
I have been looking into them for a while, and I am reasonably interested in the Motorola Droid 4 and Samsung Galaxy S Relay.
Unfortunately, it seems the only QWERTY phones you can buy in NZ are old or low quality models (e.g. trademe has things like the Samsung Sidekick or Xperia X10 like mine, may it rest in peace)

So here's a summary of my problems:

  1. Most importantly, I can't find nice QWERTY phones in NZ after a lot of googling so I might have to get one imported?
  2. Even if I got one imported, I don't know enough about cell phone networks etc. to know whether they would work in this country (particularly the two phones I listed)
  3. If they did work in this country, would I be restricted in my choice of network providers?

And for suggestions on phones here are my preferences:

  • Physical QWERTY keyboard
  • Capable of running android 4.0 or above (this is more to make sure it's not an ancient phone than anything)
  • Don't really mind about anything else (even price), the most important aspect is the physical keyboard

If anyone could help point me in the right direction, make a suggestion or address any of my questions I would be very thankful.

so wcdma 2100 is both networks (city) and wcdma 850 is spark and skinny and wcdma 900 is voda/ 2deg (rural)

looks like the galaxy s relay is only 850/2100 so you would be restricted to spark rural.

the droid 4 has 850/900/2100 so you could use it on vodka/spark rurally and city.

hope this helps,

ill have a look and see if any other phones are worth a look.

Hi! Thanks for the replies.

No, I did not look at that exact link but it does list most of the phones that I had seen before.
The LG Optimus F3Q also looks quite good. If I am reading this specs right, it looks like it'd work on the same networks as the Droid 4?

IMO you would be better off buying a mainstream phone that you can buy a case for that has a Bluetooth Keyboard. I know they exist for iPhone, i'm sure you will find one for some Android phones too.

I have a Droid 4 in good condition that I no longer need, OP is welcome to take it off my hands. Beware that it is currently flashed with a stock (rootable) Verizon jellybean ROM which sort of works out of box but need some tweaking to get proper performance out of. PM me if you are interested.

I've got a Samsung Captivate Glide i927 (with slide out qwerty keyboard) that I'm looking to sell, with cover, 2 spare batteries, and battery cradle charger, running android 4.0.4. Approx 14 months old, imported from AT&T US, worked fine on 2 degrees.

$150 ono, PM me if interested.
