If you mean charging the host device (phone/tablet), then no, generally doesn't work without support from firmware/kernel. Only device I have encountered that can do it is my Nvidia Shield Tablet, as Nvidia specifically added support for this in their Lollipop update. Not sure, but I would imagine there may be custom ROMs and/or kernels for some devices that may enable it. Wireless charging of course remains an option if the device supports it.

There is a device called a +port that works on Dell Venue 8 Pro, I think it works with SOME Android hardware.

IME wireless charge cannot even keep up with use of the device. I had hoped that a combination of wireless charge and the MHL cable might have stopped the battery going negative when using the phone as a media player, but it shuts off teh wireless charge as soon as you put a mhl cable into the phone, not tried a usb host cable yet in that situation.

Good point that the charger will not keep up via wireless charging, I wasn't intending to make it seem like it would increase charge, only that it would supply charge.

With MHL, using a 2.0 adapter (and now 3.0 adapter with my Note 4) my device gains charge while outputting HD video (not tried demanding emulator gaming yet in that setup though).

The only time I've seen my devices charging on a Qi wireless charger draw more power than its charging is when the GPS is on, is driving and navigating
