Hi, after doing a lot of research I decided to buy the LG G4. it's a great phone and on sale at the moment. but have few doubts about the new M update. I did a quick research yesterday and found out that only few models of G4 will get the M update.
The model I was thinking of buying was either the H815 or the H815T which were not on the update list. But some sites say they might still get the M update
These are the other models listed on price me website but prices are different

F500 being the most expensive $887

I'm coming from Apple background and this is going to be my first android. So have no idea how this updates work. Does your carrier effect your update? or is it international? I'm on 2D

If anyone could help that'd be great.

The F500 may be one of the dual-SIM versions

H815T is the version Australia gets, H815 is the "worldwide" version, either will work happily in NZ.

I have seen the G4 for sale in a 2Degrees store (Johnsonville, Wellington), but no mention of it on their website or in the store near my office.

I wouldn't buy a phone with the expectation that it'll get Marshmallow unless it's been officially announced, and given LG's past history of support, I'm not holding my breath for it to show up for my G4.

2 Degrees uses LTE Band 3 (1800Mhz) which is supported by both the H815 and H815T

Thanks for the reply. I'm coming from Apple background so my phones always had the latest firmware. I just don't want to be left with an old firmware. My other option was to get the Nexus 6 as I love big screens and it's stock android and will probably get the M update.
The question is If I can't get M for G4 can I still root it to use M features? Is root equal to jailbreak or is it flash?

You tend to be able to get custom roms, which aren't officially supported but often tend to be better than official anyway. Also Cyanogen supports many phones, it's close to stock Android, but alas not the G4 officially. There are some ROMS here on xda-developers, which is the main site for this sort of thing.

Even if your phone is out of date, does it matter? Often, no. I'm on 4.4.1 (or something) with my S4, it works great and does everything I need, so I haven't bothered to update to 5.x even though I can. Once 6.x comes out and there's a third party Touchwiz based custom ROM I may move, or I may not. Sometimes newer ROMs are more hassle than they're worth, getting all the old stuff going again.

I'd disagree about the LG GX series not getting updates.

Yes the are slow but my LG G2 got an update to lollipop and I read that it may get marshmellow (eventually)

The LG G2 is a great phone and if I needed to upgrade (I don't) then I'd look at the G4 based on the strength of the G2

cheers for the reply. I really like the M update and I'm really keen to get it on my first Androud device. the new Nexus series was my first choice but prices are out of my range!
I might still get the G4 and hope for an M update.

I just had a read of Android M features. Looks like some minor enhancements, nothing to write home about. You should be able to get M on your G4 somehow, eventually at least, even if via a custom ROM.

If updates is an issue then not a good move to Android but as Tim has said there are alternative ways with Android due to thier ability to be heavily modified.

G4 is a nice phone but for updates on a regular basis Nexus and Motorola are the go.

If you decide on G4 do some reading on custom Roms as it is really androids strength. Having said that a quick look on XDA shows not a lot of development.

Be sure that your new phone supports Band 28 (LTE 700MHz). This is used by all the carriers (or will be). And will be an increasingly important frequency as 2g gets turned off. So that's the 818 818T and the Dual sim 818P. Note that the Dual SIM cannot support the wireless charging back covers. The G4 is likely to get Marshmallow, but who would know when?

Then get yourself a Nexus phone and have one of the best if not the best experiences with Android in terms of software updates. Nexus phones received pretty much the same support that iPhones do in terms of software updates.

I've been more than happy with the speed in which LG have rolled out updates for my G3, eg this was one of the first phones to get the upgrade to Lollipop ( in Poland a few days after release), and I had it by early 2015; it also was relatively quick to patch for Stagefright (which many other brands haven't done).

I would totally buy another in the G series, though I've no need to upgrade at this point as the G3 serves me fine. (Unlike the above poster, I love the screen size and have no problem with the phone's overall size - fits in my pocket fine; also better screen/phone ratio than many, eg G4 = 72.5% versus iPhone 6+ = 67.9%. (edit: interestingly, the ratio has worsened across the three generations: G2=76.3 / G3=75.2 / G4 =72.5)

And, anyway, going by a quick Google, it looks like LG is planning on releasing Marshmallow for not only the G4 but also the G2 and G3, eg:
