After restoring my previously rooted LG G4 completely to factory after it having been rooted I thought I'd try Semble, and it still pops up saying "rooted devices aren't supported". Does it actively blacklist devices which have tried accessing it previously whilst rooted?

I find it a bit silly that my apps for OneCard, ANZ, Kiwibank, ASB and Snapper all work perfectly happily whilst rooted but Semble refuses to do so. Do they not have much faith in their security measures?

No, I don't think they do. Their software is just good at finding this.

Perhaps @roobarb could expand on this.

I put it down to both support and security.

Support, you are running a non-standard configuration that has not been tested by Semble.

Security, you have deliberately bypassed Android security so even basic OS protection cannot be trusted.

That is my interpretation of Semble's logic.

My personal opinion is if you root a device then you accept the consequences and don't be surprised by others not being so enthusiastic.

His device is back to factory and it's still not working,

Is it like Samsung devices and detects a Knox boot flag ?

Why would the app not work on factory spec now?

Does/did your root app have a setting to preserve root over firmware flashes, or did you have TWRP installed with the preserve root feature enabled? Your phone might be rooted without a SU app, or it might just be partially rooted.

The only other thing I could think of is yes, maybe they note IMEIs of devices that have been rooted and permanently disallow them, but that'd seem extreme.

A clean factory image was applied via LG's own firmware flash app. The phone has never had TWRP installed or even had the boot loader unlocked.

Does tripping Knox cause semble to stop working, even if phone is not rooted?

Is the image you flashed specifically from a nz carrier that supports semble?

The G4 isn't officially supported by any carrier in NZ. 2Degrees sells them with a generic Australian firmware.

Oh... Well as far as I'm aware, Semble needs something specific added to the firmware by the carrier to work - otherwise the best you can do is use a phone that Semble does work with to set it up with the app, and then swap the sim into the G4 and set it as your default payment provider. Could be wrong, though, someone who's used Semble might be able to weigh in on it.

Correct. Generic devices don't have the API required for the secure element on the SIM to work. You can setup a Semble-ready SIM on a supported handset, select a default card Always On and move this SIM to your NFC-enabled phone. Then set the default Tap & Pay to "Semble" and off you go.

Lets see if ANz's HCE app due out before xmas works on rooted phones...

From memory unlike Semble HCE doesn't have a Telco dependency

Sounds like I'll just be sticking to the old plastic card then. On the upside, that means that when the NFC doesn't work for tap/pay on the phone I don't then have to fumble around and extract the card anyway.
