I've just bought a Chromecast 2 and overall am reasonably happy that it does the job with netflix and youtube

I do however video files stored a my network. On my android phones and tablets these files are accessed through ES File Explorer which then uses a local video player (VLC/MX etc...) to play them on the device.

I've downloaded and installed the ES File Explorer Chromecast plugin and that does the job very well but only for MP4 files - it doesn't work for avi, mov, mkv files. I understand this is a limitation of the actual Chromecast which only supports mp4

Aside from playing the video on my phone and screen casting (it's a bit jerky and I can't use the phone for other things), does anyone have any other suggestions or perhaps an app?

(waiting for VLC to support Chromecast)

What kind of device are they stored on on the network? If its a PC, or a certain NAS, install Plex server. Plex will do the work converting it to the format the chromecast or any other device needs on the fly, Plex also has an android app to let you cast it

It's an external hard drive connected to the USB port on my router

However I can access it through my PC so I'll have a look at Plex. It means I'll have to have the PC on but it's pretty much on most of the time anyway

Thanks

Correct, Plex also nicely organises tv series, with all the pictures, episode descriptions etc.

You may find it easier/faster to have the hard drive connected to the PC and share it that way

You don't need Plex for just streaming to a Chromecast. Use your PC + Chrome and install Videostream (http://getvideostream.com/), from here just browse to the video you want to stream via the extension and cast it. It'll handle transcoding etc for the Chromecast. There is also an Android remote in the pro version of the app (which is pretty cheap IIRC).

True, forgot about this. I didn't know you could use it from your phone but have been using this lately, I don't actually have plex installed. If the PC is on all the time plex could be a great option though
