I got a new Samsung Galaxy J5 a couple of days ago and I can't believe the mount of included crap foisted on me. So I am considering converting it to Cyanogen Mod as I have done with previous handsets.

Has someone gotten this successfully working and if so feedback please?

Does Cyanogen Mod affect use of NFC and Semble?

Semble doesn't work with root.

You need root to install cm.

1eStar: Semble doesn't work with root.

Thanks for that. I will just have to go without. Getting rid of the 2degrees ROM with all that extra crap is more important.

The directions specify Odin 3.10.7 which will not work on Windows XP. Will an earlier version of Odin work?

You shouldn't be using Windows XP for a start... The older versions of Odin still supported by XP will not support your phone, you can try http://glassechidna.com.au/heimdall/ however you really need to update your OS to a supported one by both Microsoft and app developers.

michaelmurfy: Heimdall supports Linux.

Thanks for that.

It's a tough one because one hand it says it supports a "wide variety of Samsung devices" but only has a shirt list of tested ones and my phone is not included.

Furthermore, I'm will looking for a version of TWRP for the J500Y. It appears there isn't one yet.

Heimall would be the goto.

On the note of CM and NFC, in my personal experience (CM13 on m8x) the secure nfc portion (im having a blank on its real name) is all closed source and so not included in CM13. While semble itself would work if the sim was already set, the App itself will not run.

NFC itself works totally fine, just dont expect any app to support it. most will simply list your phone as unsupported rather than moaning about being rooted as it fails the initial compatibility check.

I have not bothered to try NOPing the apk to see if it will still run, too much effort and not enough time to counter the effort of simply having a OTG cable and stock OS to switch backups from.

I must say sticking CM (or any alternative rom) on samsung devices that arent flagships seems to be a bit of a frustration to get past. seems kernal based replacements are needed rather than Just a boot loader to get a custom recovery in.

I had a family friend who bought me their off China originated version of the S3 (was an official one not a knock off mind you.) it was "full of a asians email when we reset it" I went with nuking the crapware.

What would you recommend for "nuking the crapware" please?

@MichaelNZ root + titanium backup will do it or just hitting disable on apps you don't need. Ensure you're not disabling or uninstalling anything needed by the Samsung firmware.

For anyone who is interested I rooted it with this method:

How To Root Samsung Galaxy J5 SM-J500Y–Easy Guide

What this guide neglects to mention is you must activate the "OEM unlocking" option under Developer Options first - in addition to USB Debugging. A Google shows some people reporting bricking their phone by not doing this. Fortunately, in my case, I only got an error message and had to start again.

Also, their download package includes Odin v.3.06 and v.3.07 or above is required.
