I was waiting for the details of the next Nexus device after deciding that the Nexus 5X wasn't a justifiable upgrade over the Nexus 4 I own.
Sadly the Pixel is priced way out of my price range ($1000 is too much for me to spend on a phone, $750 would be my absolute max)

The 5X had two main issues that always kept me away - 4G Band Support was limited for 2D and 2GB RAM

So, asking if anyone can recommend any other alternatives that overcome the issues I had with the 5X, yet have as close to stock Android as possible and are priced within "budget"

Otherwise I'll probably get the 5X as it can be obtained for around $400 now (32GB Black)

Yes not much around

If you can go to 700 then the nexus 6p (while you can still get it from pbtech) or the oneplus 3 (I am currently using this and love the dash charge).

Otherwise just go for the nexus 5x.

Apparently they had them for 366 at the noel leeming sale :( TBH I'm a little disappointed I didn't pick one up...

Is the 6P that much better than the 5X to justify an extra $300?

The 6P and the One Plus 3 are too big for me; screen size must be under 5.2 inches

Moto G is very close to stock. The G is Google. O/s upgrades are good to reasonable depending on your place in the rollout queue. Security updates are somewhat slow but seem to arrive eventually, perhaps a little less than reasonable. G4 has not been released in nz market yet to my knowledge.

I switched from the Oneplus 2 to the Nexus 5X and no regrets at all.

1) Ram is not an issue. Ram management on this phone works fine and you're able to also multitask fine. I can have many tabs open in Firefox and some of the (not used) tabs will do a quick render from cache however not an issue.
2) General performance is good and not had an issue.
3) I am a heavy phone user.
4) Battery life is also decent and rapid charging is awesome to have.

Honestly for the price there is nothing that compares right now. I use my phone on Skinny Direct which the 5X has proper band support for (LTE over 700MHz) and works well.

Keep this option open - it is a good phone despite the flaws you've said. Skinny Direct is also somewhat superior than 2degrees IMHO.

Very happy with my 5x after a OnePlus one - it's just the right size in comparison. The fast charge is super useful if you have access to USB C during the day.

I switched to skinny then skinny direct after a month or two with the 5x and don't regret it all - I wouldn't worry about the limited 4G band support.

The camera is gorgeous.

Thanks for the 5X feedback, maybe I will have to reconsider it despite the flaws.

My Nexus 4 is starting to have issues (though it may just be the constant running of Pokemon Go)

I am in the same boat at the OP. I was hoping to upgrade my Sony Z1 Compact but won't be doing it at that price point. I see Sony has released a Compact in its X range but haven't seen any details of it being available in NZ or the cost. I do like the idea of the 4.6" screen though.

Another big 5X fan here. Particularly given the current price you can find them at, I'd definitely recommend one. My experience is similar to michaelmurfy's.

Oh and the fingerprint sensor is amazing. I never really cared for them til I got this one, now I absolutely love it!

Nexus 5X currently on sale at The Warehouse Stationery for $399 (usual price $499). I'm going to be picking one up in the next few days.

I was tempted... but they were 366 at NL event apparently. So I thought I'd at least wait until only NL has them on sale so I can get the extra 5% from WS price match ;-) I'm also half hoping with google having pulled them from their online store to clear the way for Pixel, there might be more sales on them through retailers in the coming weeks.
