I cannot believe that NZ Met Service does not have an Android  weather app. They have apps for coastal, rural and snow but nothing for the rest of New Zealand.

I don't want to use the alternative commercial weatherwatch app

They did have one (I have it).
They have pulled it and said they will have a free one out early April

Can't find an actual link in there website, but shows up in the app description :)

ATTENTION: NEW APP IN DEVELOPMENT

MetService is launching a new FREE app for local weather forecasts which will eventually replace this app. We anticipate this will be available in April 2017. We recommend you save $2.59 and download the new app when this is available shortly. In the meantime, the mobile website, m.metservice.com, has the latest MetService forecasts, warnings and radar and is available on your phone browser.

It really is unbelievable that they have not had a free app ages ago. How any firm in the business of providing information do not have a free app. Will wait and see if one eventuates.

I paid the $2.59 for the Metservice app, years ago. Even if you'd like to wait the free one, nothing preventing you getting this one.

I'm also horrified that a business would charge for a service of any sort. surprised

Normally I would but I understand the new app is quite different and it is free and also MetService is a Government Agency which the sole reason for existence is to provide weather information free of charge. It should not be charging for the app it should always be free. I can actually download the Met Office app which is from UK Met Office but also does NZ and is probably what the original NZ app is based on. The UK one has always been free. I will wait and see what NZ come up with.

I use the web page as well. Might as well not bother though, they predicted this big storm in Wellington and there's just a bit of rain.

no good for me I want something that will go to my Android watch. I was using Weather Underground which has the advantage of using all the weather stations around where I live but lately it has stopped working and just sends the WU to the watch. I mentioned it in another forum.

The Meteorological Service of New Zealand Limited is a state owned enterprise, not a government agency. As such it's a company on its own right. You don't see people wanting NZ Post to transport parcels for free. Or Kiwirail to transport stuff for free.
