If you have Android P you can use a new feature called Private DNS. This goes well with the Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 DNS service:

Alternatively you can download Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 from Google Play. This app creates a VPN tunnel but only for the DNS resolution.

If you have some phone with an aggressive power management (er, Huawei), make sure the add the app to the exceptions list. If you already use a VPN this will not work so you have to use the Private DNS option instead (if your OS version supports it).

There's also DNS changer by Blockada which you can use to point your phone to various other DNS services as well (not just 1.1.1.1) for the purposes of adblocking/malware protection.

Note that I think it only sends udp port 53, so it's not secure in the same way as the official app.

Given how often Android phones are updated, and how long the last, Android P or later should be the most common Android variant in about 2023 ;)

Not sure. I know they moved a lot more stuff into Google Services, so they can update it more easily without relying on suppliers.
