They have to... How else would China spy on everyone?
Jump on the beta track and get an update every week.
For a start, stuff that, I have better things to do... And what OS is new every week? How much is wrong with it that it needs that 
That and I have an inherent fear that the way things are going, China isn't going to be in the global "good books" thanks to a certain orange dickhead, and nobody will ever get updates again.
(and it's your job to sell xiaomi)

There are many things to be said on this subject, but this isn't the thread for it. The poor chap's just asking for recommendations.

I'm not on here to sell phones, I'm on here as an enthusiast and to share knowledge where I can.
I've been using MIUI as a custom ROM on and off since 2010. I bought a Mi Max v1 and am a fan of what Xiaomi have done as a company.
They have brought excellent hardware to increasingly low and therefore more accessible prices, they jumped on and localised for India to great success, they built software that was enthusiast-driven from the very start and has amazing customisation options, open it up so you can still(!) install your own custom ROMs if you want including the well-maintained Xiaomi.eu, take feedback for all of their products, and many other things besides.
They have for years offered the best bang for buck smartphones in the world to the point where many people, myself included, imported them and recommended them. MIUI is a great platform with excellent features, it's intuitive and familiar to folks coming from the very feature-packed Samsung UI, and if you don't like it, you can replace it with something more vanilla like LineageOS (or a Google Generic System Image post-treble) with a little weekend hobbyist tinkering. That's fun for some. I'm one of them.
Meanwhile Huawei have in the Nova 3i brought a killer phone with 128GB of storage in an awesome colour down to $499. It's changed the market in NZ. These sub-$500 phones can do ~90% of what a flagship can do. Unless you desperately need the latest camera, or a 1440p OLED screen, or wireless charging, or water resistance, there's no reason not to start looking at midrangers. Phones that aren't awful started getting affordable in NZ in 2015 and I firmly believe that good technology should be accessible so it can enrich the lives of as many people as possible. It wasn't long ago I wouldn't have given my mother a $200-$400 phone because I'd have had no end of tech support calls for it. Moto, Huawei, Xiaomi, and Nokia all offer awesome midrange options now. iPhone 6 and 6s are reasonably priced too. If we have to use smartphones, life is too short to use ones that are slow and frustrating.
