Hi all...looking for mid-range phone recommendations (around the $500-600 mark), as I want to upgrade my wife's Galaxy S2 (!). Preferably Spark, or unlocked.

What's the word on the Moto G6? Reviews seem positive (other than the slow camera).

Thanks for any advice 🙂

Moto G5 is midrange, bit slower than my P9 but fantastic for the price. My wife loves her G5, and that it's not too huge. G6 is bigger, my wife didn't want that size. G5 from Amazon.com just got Android 8.1 yesterday.

Also consider Nokia.

I'm in a similar situation, leaning towards the Nokia 7.1 as it was only released a couple of months ago so should see updates for quite some time, and being more recent it has superior specs to many mid-range phones.

$499 from Noel Leeming at the moment, $479 if you use the Black Friday code.

Oh hey, no-one has said Nova 3i or Redmi Note 5 yet. Those are hands-down the midrangers to beat (unless you're married to vanilla Android). :)

I'd recommend a last year's flagship. Second hand if you feel like saving a few dollars more dollars and can find a good contesting one. LG G6 maybe. Or maybe an S7 or s8 depending on what you can find.

Personally I think older flagship are great value for money. Most of the new features. Good cameras, fairly up to date OS and a discount on the new wiz bang version.

I had to upgrade my Galaxy S2 a few months ago after it found its way into the washing machine, and I found the choices very limited as I still wanted a phone that would fit in my pocket and was OK when in my pocket when riding my bicycle.  Eventually, I found the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) from Vodafone and I am very pleased.  As well as being a nice phone of the right size, it is also waterproof down to 1 metre.  There are lots of choices if you do not mind a bigger phone.  The A3 (2018) was too large.  The only real problem I have with it is the Samsung bloatware - I would prefer a more pure Android.

The Galaxy A series are great, 2017 onwards. Nice cameras, good battery life.

Xiaomi support their phones longer than anyone else in the industry. Jump on the beta track and get an update every week.

They have to... How else would China spy on everyone?

For a start, stuff that, I have better things to do... And what OS is new every week? How much is wrong with it that it needs that wink

That and I have an inherent fear that the way things are going, China isn't going to be in the global "good books" thanks to a certain orange dickhead, and nobody will ever get updates again.

(and it's your job to sell xiaomi)

I've had the Huawei Nova 3i for a few days. Really like the hardware (great screen and camera), 128gb storage. The OS (EMUI) not so much. I prefer stock Android. I'm getting used to it though (and tweaking the settings a lot). Great buy at the current Black Friday sale price (I paid $299).

The trick with Huawei seems to be going into settings and telling it not to terminate programs that you want to keep running. Even the P9 got better at that with EMUI 5 / Android 7. I'd prefer stock Android as well though.

There are many things to be said on this subject, but this isn't the thread for it. The poor chap's just asking for recommendations.

I'm not on here to sell phones, I'm on here as an enthusiast and to share knowledge where I can.

I've been using MIUI as a custom ROM on and off since 2010. I bought a Mi Max v1 and am a fan of what Xiaomi have done as a company.

They have brought excellent hardware to increasingly low and therefore more accessible prices, they jumped on and localised for India to great success, they built software that was enthusiast-driven from the very start and has amazing customisation options, open it up so you can still(!) install your own custom ROMs if you want including the well-maintained Xiaomi.eu, take feedback for all of their products, and many other things besides.

They have for years offered the best bang for buck smartphones in the world to the point where many people, myself included, imported them and recommended them. MIUI is a great platform with excellent features, it's intuitive and familiar to folks coming from the very feature-packed Samsung UI, and if you don't like it, you can replace it with something more vanilla like LineageOS (or a Google Generic System Image post-treble) with a little weekend hobbyist tinkering. That's fun for some. I'm one of them.

Meanwhile Huawei have in the Nova 3i brought a killer phone with 128GB of storage in an awesome colour down to $499. It's changed the market in NZ. These sub-$500 phones can do ~90% of what a flagship can do. Unless you desperately need the latest camera, or a 1440p OLED screen, or wireless charging, or water resistance, there's no reason not to start looking at midrangers. Phones that aren't awful started getting affordable in NZ in 2015 and I firmly believe that good technology should be accessible so it can enrich the lives of as many people as possible. It wasn't long ago I wouldn't have given my mother a $200-$400 phone because I'd have had no end of tech support calls for it. Moto, Huawei, Xiaomi, and Nokia all offer awesome midrange options now. iPhone 6 and 6s are reasonably priced too. If we have to use smartphones, life is too short to use ones that are slow and frustrating.
