Why doesn't the Instagram app work properly on Android?

I'm sick and tired of forcing it to close and clearing cache, in order for it to function.

Happened on my old phone - Smart V11 or V12 - and is continuing on my new phone, Samsung Galaxy A04.

No issues here on a range of phones.

I wonder if your phone's are lower spec'd and just can't cope?

That is a down side of Android, that developers have to struggle to make their apps work with such a wide range of hardware.

Instagram works fine on midrange and flagship Android devices, but not low-end devices like the Galaxy A04.

The main problem with the Galaxy A04 (and your previous phones) is the lack of RAM, which is barely enough to just run Android. It's no surprise that a media-heavy app like Instagram will struggle to run. I'd recommend switching to Instagram Lite instead, which is designed for low-end phones.

All good here on range of devices, old, new, low and high end, mix of brands.

A04 should be fine for it. Are you transferring data from phone to phone, or starting afresh ?

No issues here. Clear the cache and reset it in the Android Settings app, then uninstall it and reinstall it

Uninstalling and reinstalling the app seems to have made things worse. Now when I exit the app (I could close it and next time I opened it, the feed refreshed), it doesn't close until I force stop.

Do One NZ deliberately sell low-quality phones? Because I thought paying $219 for the Samsung one I was getting some form of quality - after telling Lana at One NZ that the Smart V was slow. The lady in the shop said any other V model would also be like that, so recommended the A04.

Did you do what I said and clear the cache and data before uninstalling and reinstalling?

No, you just chose the most budget option Samsung has. I was able to get the same phone for $110 about two months ago using multiple coupon codes on samsung.com. (used not as a primary phone)

Yeah, as others have said, apps are already badly optimised for Android, and the fact that you have a budget phone doesn't help

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

How much should a decent phone these days cost? Because $219 is an awful lot of money in my eyes.

Something like the Samsung Galaxy A34 for ~$500 is going to give you a much better experience

You're not being realistic. Certainly not in the new market.  You might find something second hand a few years old for that price.

Phones range in price from $99 to $3500 with higher end main stream phones around $1600.

It’s not necessary to spend $1600 but for something that performs well you’re looking at $400ish.

There’s diminishing returns but you do get what you pay for.

My daughter has a $290 Samsung and runs everything fine inc Instagram. So while the price might not seem budget, it is in the scheme of things.....

I don’t intend to be rude in saying this, but $200 is worth a lot less nowadays. If you can get up to $400-500 you can get into the xiaomi/redmi range of phones which tend to be more price performant.

Otherwise try use the instagram lite app to lessen requirement.
