As title says...

Used to own a iphone 3G, was going to buy the new one but am having second thoughts,

I really like the idea of an android phone (I like to mess around with GUIs and stuff) but have no idea where to start to looking... and so many questions like

whats the quickest phone?
what version of android am I looking for? (Reading about 2.2?)
what can I import into NZ or what can I buy in NZ?
what will work on Telecoms network? (XT)

Am after something with a soft keyboard,

People seem to suggest the Samsung Galaxy? But there is something about it I am just not liking... not sure what it is yet :s

Any suggestions would be of much help

Cheers!

Hmm looks good...

Is there anything coming out in the next month or two that is worth waiting out for?

Also just watched a video on the HTC Incredible, thoughts?

DroidX is coming...not sure when.

Also there's the Nokia N8, due "soon"...looks good, but running Symbian, which is a bit long in the tooth now, even though I quite like the UI.

HTC Incredible cannot be used in NZ. A Motorola Milestone might do what you want (when it finally gets here); it was my "phone of choice" until I got sick of waiting and bought a Nexus One. You'll need to import a Desire from Australia if you want to use it on Telecom.

DroidX is CDMA only, though.

Just be aware that Android phones are not fully 'baked' yet (IMO). So $1500 is quite a lot to drop on something as an experiment. I have a Hero (on 2.1) and have decided (probably) to skip the Desire generation and wait for the next one. Having said that I do believe that the Desire is good value at the moment as a capable entry point, as is the Nexus One, I just am unsure about the N1's physical trackball having used the Hero.

Assuming 6 monthly product updates (seems to be the norm in the mobile phone world. See Hero - Legend - Desire) then HTC are probably due to release a World phone to succeed the Desire.

Android is great particularly if you like to 'tinker'.

Yea so far the Desire seems to be my choice of the bunch, Pricespy has a number of NZ based stores I assume just sell imports for around the $850-$900 mark which leaves plenty for a larger SSD or something,

Whichever one you get (I have a Desire and Galaxy S, prefer the Galaxy S, but the Desire is really nice too) you'll have enough cash to get a 32GB microSD card. I have one, recommend it highly!

I have a Desire.. i'd recommend it! Should be $800-1000 or so.. Don't bother waiting, or you'll be waiting forever :P

Be aware some of the droid phones are CDMA only.. (and telecom is turning off EVDO data soon)

For Telecom? I think Mobicity is generally accepted as the best choice for a Telecom Desire.

I ordered mine from Clove.. using the Royal mail option it was cheaper and customs didn't hit me with GST.

If you want one that works on XT, try Mobicity, I think lots of people have ordered from there before, check the other posts :)
