I'm wondering what size/class of card people are using on their Android devices.

I'm thinking a 16gb will be minimum for me (8gb Galaxy S).

Has anyone noticed a difference in performance (particularly in media playback) from the card between the different classes?

Everyone said I needed a class 6 for my Desire.
It shipped with a class 4 one... I am currently using an old 8gb one I got about 2-3 years ago that has no clas rating visible on it. Works fine with everything, including playback of music and videos.
I do intend to upgrade to a 16gb at some point maybe, but I'm unsure if I will need too.

I use 8GB class 6. I have enough music on to listen for 3 hours without hearing the same song twice. It's rarely more than half full.

16GB? They cost the same as 3 x 8GB.

I just don't have enough time in a month to listen to 10% of the music that represents. :-)

Video takes up space. an hour-long TV show (DivX) can be 350MB. But 10 of those is 10 hours...and I'll see my PC long before then. So I might have 2 or 3 on the phone. I can always download more from the FTP server at home.

Remember....with Android you don't have to have it all on your phone. That's Apple thinking.

I have a 32GB card, they only come in Class 2 at present. The in-phone performance is just fine, even for watching 720P content. They are disproportionately expensive, as Linuxluver says, but may still be worth it to you depending on your use (having my whole music collection is gold to me).

Whats performance like with only class 2? im tempted to get higher though so HD recording will improve.

Performance is fine, Galaxy S records video to the internal SD, so its a non-issue. May be an issue on phones without an internal SD space I guess, but thats about the only use-case scenario I can think of where being Class 2 is really likely to be an issue (unless you're a person who very regularly transfers several gigabytes to the card, in which case the slower write speeds may be tedious, but for most people the only time it'll really be a bother is when you initially load the card with your music collection).

I'd only get a Sandisk one at the present time, I got mine direct from them at first release, so no idea what current prices are (but bound to have fallen a bit).

A work mate of mine got a 32GB "Verizon" OEM SanDisk 32GB sdcard via eBay (the US one). It worked out at about NZ$180.

Mymemory and play.com have them for about 85 pounds, which would come to something that price (without the risks of purchasing from Ebay).

I did actually edit my post with their prices last night, but alas it seems to have disappeared!

+1 no performance issues at all. Its no big deal transferring stuff around between card and PC, I have plenty to do while it transfers. I got my Sandisk 32G C2 via my comgateway account.

$180 is a good price! I just got an N1 and dropped a 16GB SanDisk (Class 10) into it. $165 off Ascent.

The main issue I have is that the majority of apps don't seem to be able to be run off the card (I currently have about 8GB of music on the card and half a dozen apps), and the internal memory is fast filling up...

My music collection is too big to fit on any micro SD card, however what you can do is give music you like a rating of 1star or more, and then just synch music that has a rating of 1 star or more. Also you might want to synch a random number of unrated tracks to give some variety.

I'm using an 8GB Class 6 card that came with my vodafone branded Magic but for my usage a slower card would be fine.

I don't use my phone as a media player though, after owning an iPod Classic the convenience of having my entire library available is too much to give up (plus the classic iPod clickwheel interface works great for music)

Im keen to hear more about this, have you posted something about it before ? Ive tried using gmote with not a great deal of success.

ES File explorer does network shares and I think it does FTP too.

Custom roms will give you CIFS which are SMB Networking shares (windows), and allow them to be mounted so they appear to all apps as if the files are on the phone. I believe in many cases ES File Explorer will copy the file to the phone before launching it. Only useful on a network of course though.

I'm going to wait until the 32gb sd card market is a little more saturated, with higher speed cards. Till then i can survive on 4gb with a small amount of media every now and then.
