the way I understand it rooting is when you flash a different recovery image to your phone which then allows you to flash a rom which has root level permissions. I am going to be doing this today so I will sort the results and method in this thread

You could try this: http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/11/how-to-root-your-android-phone-superoneclick-method/

Worked on my Galaxy S a while ago. Not sure how uptodate those instructions are tho.

I don't have an 845 but have a Samsung Galaxy S i9000. I rooted my phone the other day thanks to someone posting a link to XDA forum giving details how to root using SuperOneClick. I don't think this works for the 845 though.  AFAIK when rooting a phone, it just "unlocks" a superuser mode which from there you can install new roms if you wish.

I flashed celestial teapot onto my 845.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=802893 has installation instructions.
You basically flash a recovery image and then boot to the recovery image and install the new custom ROM (which will have ROM)

You will have to delete all your user data/etc when flashing a new ROM, so back it all up!

what are you using z4root for? The custom ROM comes with root out of the box.

EDIT: sorry, was assuming you were installing a custom ROM. If you just want root on the stock image, just go for permanent root. I haven't tried z4root on the 845, I went straight to flashing the custom ROM.

permanent. used it on my captivate fine. if it doesnt work, it's not going to change any system files.

as always no one on geekzone is responsible for any actions you take on the phone..

root will be successful when you see the superuser icon (grey android with eye patch) in your app drawer.
