MapQuest has released it free MapQuest for Android application today...

The MapQuest for Android app is free and does not require a trial period, subscription or upgrade. Features include:

- Voice-guided/Turn-by-turn Navigation: The phone speaks directions regarding where and when to make a turn
- Voice Search: Drivers can speak the desired destination for search and directions
- Map Toolbar: Easily find restaurants, coffee shops, gas stations and parking with one click
- Walking & Driving Directions: Recommends the best route and rotates the map based on orientation of travel
- Live Traffic Flow/Incidents: Extensive coverage updated every 5 minutes

No offline map :(
A nice app, doesn't it basically offer the same service as G-Map preinstalled in all droid phones ? free turn-by-turn voice nav etc etc.

Like all other apps, it's a question of personal preference. If developers didn't create alternatives, then we would always be stuck with the first one to be deployed ;)

Will have to give it a try, going overseas later in the year. Does anyone have any experience with the quality of the mapping? Presumably the same as the iPhone version.

EDIT: Ah, online only? Was hoping it might provide a less data intensive option to GMaps/Nav.

Yea that's the only thing that Nokia phones have over Android , free worldwide offline map.

@freitas , true that hehe. Variety doesn't hurt :)

Just tried it out. This is pretty bad in comparison with Google maps navigation.

Theoretically on-line maps should be more up to date(con-current), if thats what you mean by accuracy. Where as the databases used in the likes of TomTom/Navman get updated at intervals.

But the Tom-Tom/Navman type databases may be more accurate (if less con-current) because of how they source their mapdata. Certainly I believe this is the case in New Zealand
