I know the main benefits of doing this on other phone (Galaxy for example) because you can load custom ROMs etc. But what are the benefits of doing this on an X5 (my first Android - loving it!). I understand I can delete the pre-loaded apps (like Hi Space and Layar), anything else?

Cheers

Backup apps using Titanium Backup and restore them all at once (with the paid version) after recovery/hardware reset or whatever.

Using Autokiller to tune the OS memory settings.

Replace system files

root on its own doesn't really do anything. you should just root if there is something you want to install that needs root access.

you do not need root to install custom roms.

Yeah ideally you shouldn't have to root your phone but there are a few instances where it's useful.

If you're needing to ask where to get apps to root from then you probably don't need root. Asking which app is fine but then not knowing how to source the app suggests you're probably better off waiting a bit.

Hate to disaapoint you Yoda but I rooted my phone probably 20 mins after my post.

I was just being lazy asking where to pick up the exec for Z4root but being an IT prof I shouldve just grabbed it without bothering to ask the 'friendly community'.
