Hey there.

I am a new user. I recently purchased Samsung I9100 SII.I saw a video posted in YouTube regarding video out for Samsung SII.I am currently residing in Auckland, New Zealand. Is there anywhere I can get a Video out cable for Samsung SII?

For any type of cable I go to Ebay, they are usually about a third to half of the price you would pay in NZ even on trade Me.

Normally if I want one of a particular cable I buy three and sell the other two for enough profit to make the one I keep effectively free.

I don't know anything about your phone so I am not going to say yes or no but as an example

According to the Wiki for your phone it uses an MHL cable connected to the Micro USB port. However the Wiki also says you need a MHL enabled TV but apparently any TV with an HDMI interface can be used. So take anything on there with a pinch of salt.

What you need is a small, powered adapter which takes the MHL over the microusb to a HDMI connection.

I've seen one working at the android developer meetups in auckland. The quality is absolutely excellent and you can output 1080p x264 no problem!

Not sure where to get the adapter though.

I was the one who demo'd the MHL adapter here in Auckland - they really are great.

Unfortunately they are quite difficult to get a hold of at present, most sellers received stock in the last 10 days or so, but immediately sold out filling back orders. Clove Technology is a good place to start, or failing that you will likely find some on Ebay.

The cable you linked to does not look like it will work.

Sold out, as I mentioned earlier, but at least you'll know what you're after. There are some for sale on Ebay, but at $75US I'd advise waiting.

Hi there, is the MHL adapter an Android implementation or a Samsung one? Is the external power supply necessary for the demand of 1080? To put this in context, I have a Nokia N8 which has HDMI using a basic cable (MiniHDMI Type C) which provides 720, but only media, the phone interface remains at the screen resolution (360 x 640). Samsung (Android 2.3), like the N8, supports BlueTooth keyboard and mouse. So I was considering this via a monitor (1080) but not keen on the external power supply and obscure connector.

It's neither Android nor Samsung specific - it's a new standard connection - manufacturers that will be using it include Samsung, Sony, and HTC. It won't remain obscure for very long.

An external power supply is required FOR ANY output to an external monitor.

When it outputs to a screen it is at the resolution of the phone(ie WVGA, but newer Android handset with 720p screens will be all kinds of sweet with MHL support) EXCEPT for video/pictures, which are output at their native resolutions up to 1080p.

Even at WVGA its a pretty sweet set up:

I currently use an N8 and it does not require an external power supply, uses standard Type C. Also confirmed Sony Ericsson Arc does not require power, it uses Type D. N8 renders media at 710, Arc resolution is not confirmed, however, it supports CEC, which is an excellent solution.

The only possible reason I could see for this mechanism is possibly the additional power needed for 1080?

While we're on the subject, does the Samsung Galaxy S II support HDMI and USB (USB Keyboard/mouse) at the same time?
I'm asking this question as I'm thinking HD-TV and USB keyboard/mouse at the same time.

I believe the Sony Ericsson XPERIA HDMI/USB range supports HDMI (TV out) and USB keyboard (Logitech K400) via USB Livedock hub and thus gives you a sudeo 'docking' experience.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA range must be abe to use the Logitech Unifying USB mouse/keyboard too, as one of the YouTube video showed a Logitech Performance MX mouse being used.

Just never seen/read of a HDMI/USB (external screen, keyboard/mouse) combination setup.

Is it possible to have an external screen/keyboard/mouse setup on a 2011 smartphone or am I dreaming.

Sorry if I'm seen to have gone off piste in someone elses post.

P.S. Can one plug a HDMI cable into an Audio Receiver for Music/Audio and or to watch a movie, thus taking advantage of any multi-channel audio available in a give movie sourced via the Android mobile phone. Or even games if they have multi-channel audio out.

Done on a Nokia N8, but used Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Galaxy S supported Bluetooth mouse and keyboard also.

Hmmm... seen the use of Bluetooth. Cool.
But if one doesn't have a Bluetooth mouse/keyboard.....

On the other hand a Sony Ericsson USB LiveDock is also an added cost if you go down that path.

Cool to know the Sony Ericsson HDMI is passive.
Bit surprised that the Samsung GS II HDMI is active.(needs power)

I think and correct me if I'm wrong, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA HDMI connecting to a Sony Bravia TV may have the auto power up for the TV (when TV in standby) and the use of the TV remote to mange the mobile presentation. Similar to what one has with the Sony DVD recorder/Sony Bravia TV integration over HDMI.

Sony Ericsson Adreno 205 vs Samsung Mali-400MP using HDMI.
No points for guessing the winner on the GPU front.

[Samsung by a long way]

AND I have an Adreno 200 ... which can barely play 720p videos and is twice as slow as an Adreno 205. *sigh*

Xperia is CEC compliant, i.e. works with Sony and Panasonic TV remotes (I don't have any others to test with). Can't confirm power.

Ive got a Galaxy S2 and brought a MHL adapter off trade me (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=411344637)

I am VERY disappointed with the quality. Tho I am yet to fully research what the issue is.

I dunno if its the phone, the adapter or the hdmi cable (perhaps it could be the tv doesnt support 'mhl' as mentioned above)
I did however test it on 3 different tv's...Tho the adapter and cable were the same.

I saw the novalty of being able to take movies to other places. However, I saw great potential for using it with my photography. I take out my camera, do some shots, and then whereever I end up I'm able to copy my images to my phone (usb to go + card reader) allowing me to pretty much show my images off on anyones bigscreen in full HD.

...or so I thought.
The pictures are INCREDIBLY poor looking...This is just on the tv. On the phone they look sweet.
Looking at the same picture on my media server, on the same tv they look amazing. So its no the picture being out.

Perhaps I should take that to another tread....But I just thought you might want to be aware that if it is the adapter, it may be because I didnt buy one from clove. My 'original samsung' adapter may be all s**t

I also tried a 720p and 1080p movie files, still bad....Also read it could be the gallery/movie player so have installed a couple of others, but yet to test.

It's a digital signal the whole way through, there's nothing much you can do with it unfortunately.

Apparently MHL is pretty picky though. It works fine with my big TV, but not the 22" in the bedroom. I thought the picture was "ok", not exactly what I'd call pristine, but then there's quite a bit of image scaling going on.

Most recent cameras have cables that'll plug into a TV anyway, although many are only composite. (Mine can use a TV as a live screen while using the camera, not sure why you'd want to).

I've seen a few people had trouble with some TV's, haven't particularly seen that the cable was an issue for others, although certainly it could be.

MHL stuff looks really good on my television, so I know that everything going well things should look good.
