So you can now download multiple map areas when your at home on WiFi before you go out and they stay there so you dont need data to use maps.

Just do the following:

1. Make sure you have the latest version 5.7

2. When in Google Maps, press menu

3. Then choose: more > labs > and select "Download Map Area"

4. Go back to the map and center where you want to download.

5. Hold down your finger in the center of the map untill the address pops up.

6. Press the address bubble and the standard menu will popup only now you can select "Download Map Area" which will download 10sq Miles of map around that address, you can keep doing it until you have the whole of NZ if you want, its awesum!

Try it out, works great.

Yep, there is a thread on the latest Google maps already, we mentioned this a few days ago. Its cool eh?

I was more impressed with the public transport data though!

I take the bus from Jville to Courtenay Pl when I go to town these days. There's one at 8:05am, the stop is 20 m from my driveway, I am usually one of the first five people on the bus, read my Kindle all the way to town and the last one at Courtenay Pl. Very happy, and costs a lot less than parking and petrol.

I actually didn't know the bus route until a few weeks ago - saving me a lot of money these days.

I was kinda joking :) I catch the bus when I can, really nice being able to listen to music/game/tweet/FB/browse/read the RSS feed while commuting, rather than being the driver in Auckland traffic :)

There is a limit of 10 so plan carefully where you use them :(

you can delete them anyway so doesnt really matter.

Interesting development, because this is one of the main attractions of the Nokia Ovi maps. The Nokia phone often comes preloaded with maps - in my case Australia, New Zealand and a number of Asian countries.

Not only that, but if I'm going to the UK for a week, I can pre download the UK maps (195MB) via my pc and Ovi suite before I go... something that would cost a fortune on data roaming, so good to see google offering a viable alternative could tempt a lot of people that are sticking with Nokia because of the pre-loaded maps.

Reading that link, it seems that google don't offer a simple way to download entire countries or cities... not unless you do it 10sq miles at a time and then the maps expire after 30 days.

Didn't Google say total offline maps would be available later this year? I reckon eventually Nokia Maps will have Google hot on their tails!

i never like ovi maps but i think it was more of a personal preference.

This sounds great. I used Google 'My Tracks' yesterday for the first time on a bike ride. It worked perfectly - except that it chewed up 35gb data on a 1.5 hour ride! I was going to ditch using it until I read this post.

I have downloaded 10sq miles around my address - which is all of central Wellington up to J'ville - which will cover all future rides.

One question, though - after I finished, maps gave me a schematic of my download area - all good - except there was no 'save' option, so I just backed out using the back button. I assume it has saved. Is there anyway to check the maps you have downloaded?

35 gb is quite a bit of data. Are you sure it wasn't MB?
