markenderwick: first off i'll say hi and introduce myself.

i have been reading thru the maze of replies and topics on this forum for information on the upgrade to 2.2...

so as i understand there is a rolling upgrade to 2.2 available via your phones "update software" function but not everyone is eligible as yet?...

i read thru a post about rooting the phone and manually upgrading but im a little uneasy about doing this as ive only had the phone 2 days..

is it quite easy to do? what are peoples opinions on doing the upgrade? well worth it?

Thanks

Mark

Welcome to the HTC Desire thread :D

The upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 is definitely worth it. It's noticeably speedier (not that the phone wasn't speedy before, but it's just that much faster haha), and there are a few new functions/features that make it worth it.

If you aren't comfortable rooting your phone, then I suggest you don't go there. A lot of people have bricked their Desires around the web. But if you follow the instructions to the dot, you shouldn't have any problems, provided you know your way around a computer.

If you go with the OTA update, you will lose your ability to root in the future (for the time being, until someone manages to crack the new HBOOT version). If you root now (provided you have an HBOOT of 0.80 or under) and flash a custom ROM which doesn't update your HBOOT, then you will retain your root capabilities.

Hope that helps :)

Hi Mark

This may give you some information to help you to decide what to do:

http://www.cnet.com.au/how-to-crack-the-htc-desire-339305155.htm

I followed the unrevoked method for my Telstra Desire and it worked fine for me and I don't regret it.

I flashed a stock standard official 2.2 update I found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775 with an additional fix from here:  http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7459331&postcount=11

I then added a mod to change the battery indicator in the task bar to a circle with the % charge remaining in it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=724778

Everythign works great and battery life seems good.  From a full charge last night I have used 12% in 5 1/2 hours which has included checking emails and a small amount of web surfing.

Hope this helps.

Brendan:
firstin: Just to go back to middle of thread about updating to froyo, I brought my desire from expert infotech, had it for 2weeks then updated ota to froyo only to have my ph stuck in a boot cycle, E.I werent any help said that phones were imported directly from factory via germany. could send it back to them, but reading some reviews and my own experience thought i would never c it again!!

Cut a long story short, Phone must have been debranded some were as only way i could fix was to create a gold card, install ruu wwe 1.21 rom. Waited for update to froyo for that version same thing happened when i tried.

The fix: If u have this problem make sure u have gold card in before u update!! everything working perfectly nowTongue out

Also HTC sync 3.0 Works on desire and it is way better than the old one go get it

Interesting - I got mine from expert infotech as well - but I had no need to use a gold card - even when I rooted the device! ... (apparently a gold card is necessary for branded desires when rooting also).

Not for my Telstra branded rom A8183. I booted up ubuntu, ran unrevoked 3, flashed LeeDroid 1.8 followed by the radio and it worked first time.

maybe telstra doesnt "brand" them as others do but just puts some of their applications on it? no locking down...

Considering they even re-name the Desire as the A8183, as opposed to the A8181 for all generic Desires, I'm pretty sure Telstra do a little more than that just include a few of their own applications :)

A8183 is the 850MHz version of the Desire. Not a model number just used by Telstra Australia, but also Rogers in Canada and AT&T in the USA as well if memory serves.

Thanks for the clarification :) I knew there was something different between the 8183 and the 8181 haha ;)

Griggs, the stock 2.2 update you had for your A8131, does that include the HTC Sense addons?

Also the GPS works fine? Or was that what the addtional fix was for.

Did you get your A8131 from Mobicity or some where else?

Just out of pure curiosity, any reason why some people here are waiting for / applying the official update? You do realise right, that the official / OTA ROM contains a new version of HBOOT that prevents you from rooting your device?

Hi Deadpool

It was a Telstra 8183 but with the new ROM it thinks it is an 8181 now for what its worth.  Yes the new ROM has Sense and the usual HTC widgets (I like the new Newspaper widget BTW).

GPS has been a bit mixed.  Yesterday it locked straight away but tonight when running home from work it took a minute or more to lock even though according to GPS Test it said it coud see 10 sats.  I have only had this ROM on the phone for 3 days so will see if that was an aberration over the next few days.

If you go to the XDA Developers website there are a number of custom roms on there with a serveral just be being straight offical roms with no extras.  The great thing once rooted and if using ROM Manager is that it is easy to try several different roms until you find one you like.

Yes I got the phone from Mobicity.

I would be interested to know what other Telstra phone users who have rooted now use for a custom rom and if they have any problems.

Cheers

Revowution pointed me to MoDaCo where you can down version your Hboot and then root after that, so its still possible.

Hmmn, sadly Google Voice Actions aren't working so well with 2.2 on the Desire. The Desire inbuilt music player is incompatible with the listen commands, and it doesn't appear to recognise the Sense UI phone contacts either...

(and yes, I have switched voice input over to NZ English)

In fact with a kiwi accent bugger all seems to work that well. Murray do you still have a copy of the Dolphin apk that allows youtube downloads? I am thinking about updating Dolphin to the latest version. No biggy really as I can always use my PC to download YT stuff, and to be honest I never really watch anything on my phone anyway. Probably just answered my own question....

I was wondering if anyone here with unrooted Froyo (installed via OTA) could help me out here.

My "embarrassed" emoticon has decided to slim itself down, and it looks horrid, compared to the other emoticons. It appears only the "embarrassed" emoticon is affected. I've included two screenshots of it below:

And a more close-up of the culprit!! :P

It appears the image has been resized from a smaller resolution, hence the poor quality and "squished" look.

What I'm wondering is if this is a Froyo-wide bug, or could it be a bug in the custom Froyo ROM I have running on my Desire.

Any help appreciated!! :D
