Initial thoughts on the 4a with Android 11:

  • The phone is MUCH more responsive than the Moto G8 plus, much quicker to use
  • The size is much nicer to hold, and fits in the pocket more easily. You have to be a little more careful where you click
  • Power management is much more aggressive. You have to manually tell it to let things like alarm clocks use battery in the background, even then I'm not sure they'll be reliable. Life360 tracking / alerting isn't working well, even after I removed all battery optimisations.
  • There's no easy way I've found to turn the LED torch on with gestures. With the G8 I could do "double karate chop" to toggle torch on, really handy.
  • Android gestures suck with third party launchers, so I turned them off
  • Battery doesn't seem as good as with the Moto G8 plus, but it's 3000mah compared with 4000mah so expected
  • Transferring apps / content with a USB-C to USB-C cable worked well. It then when to the app store and downloaded all the apps again anyway. I still had to log into almost every app.
  • Glass seems smoother / less more slippery / easier to glide type on

Otherwise it's a standard Android phone.

Rats, I was hoping that wasn't the case. It's my main beef with my Oppo phone, not receiving notifications for things because the phone decided it could kill my apps to improve battery performance.

I turn off battery optimisations and things are better. Ask me in a few days when I have things worked out a bit better. Overall I really like the phone, the small size and really snappy performance are great.

I have "Power-saving mode" set to off, "Smart Power Saver" disabled, "Sleep standby optimization" disabled, all the apps that I want to hear from set to "Run in background" and also added to "Startup Manager" so they will automatically start up. And still I occasionally have delayed notifications.

I was hoping that this aggressive power optimisation was an Oppo thing but it sounds like newer versions of Android are adopting it too. I never had this problem on my old phones that ran earlier versions of Android.

Well mine is now shipping. Thank you for all your posts that have helped me decide. I have been through a Samsung S3, Moto G3 and a P10 Plus, with the latest being very annoying. I got it via the parallel imported store and have received no software or security updates since purchase. Also it has had battery problems recently and mic issues so I am over it.

I think the 4a is ideal for my use so looking forward to it.

Finally extraneous parts to my Pixel 4a order are arriving. On the 29th Dick Smith sent out the Kogan SIM and a charger. The SIM arrived a few days ago and the charger finally arrived today. On the 9th October. This shipping time is atrocious. I ordered some Vive VR trackers from the US and the shipping was ordered 1st to arrived 7th. (From Adorama.)

Anyway the USB mains adapter is... USB. Full-sized USB. (USB-A?) I believe the Pixel 4a actually uses USB-C to USB-C.

Goddammit Dick Smith. Really starting to regret ordering this way and should've just got it from Amazon. (Or had a friend order from the Australian Google store, but I was more nervous about juggling that.)

The USA Pixel 4a charger is USB-C and comes with cable that has USB-C both ends. It charges the pixel at 3, 000mah. I just plug it into usa adapter, they usually I use a New Zealand native charger.

TeaLeaf:

I cant find the Amazon sale page, its showing $900 which I know is wrong, for some reason.

How long is Amazon delivery to NZ?

Amazon.com Pixel 4A product page is here, looks like Amazon are out of stock and aren't taking orders right now. I ordered 27th August, it hasn't shipped yet, but is still showing as arriving 30th Sept - I chose the second cheapest courier, who are often DHL / UPS. So I guess delivery time is 1-2 months.

Heya, I was planning to order the 4a from amazon as this seemed like the cheapest and safest approach, however for the last week it's shown that it doesn't ship to NZ. I've asked amazon support for help but they haven't been of assistance - why do you think that this was due them running out of stock?

If it really is a stock issue I'll wait, but otherwise I'll probably start looking at other phones.

Looking to get one too and noticed the same.  You could go youshop directly from the google store but they (youshop) sting you with an extra $50 charge for being over $400.  Alternative is to wait for Dicksmith to have them (26th of Oct) and get one shipped from there GST included

What's the general verdict when it comes to Dick Smith?

I see they've got the 4a for about $670 + shipping, but I've heard some pretty poor reports re their after sales service so I'm a bit hesitant.

Dick Smith is... ehhhhh. They have an NZ site, but they're ultimately shipping from Australia no matter what they frame it as, and their stuff seems to take an age to arrive. I ordered something from the US once in a shorter timeframe than it took for extras for the Pixel (charger, SIM) to arrive.

Honestly though, is service after-the-fact possible with other stores? Amazon isn't likely going to want to know anything about sending for service with international buyers. At least Dick Smith says on the store page they cover the Consumer Guarantees Act.

As it happens, I got word my Pixel ships today, at least.

Reading the Dick Smith page, they say goods would be covered by their custom charter which in my reading gives you warranty-level right of free repair for 2 years on goods over $500. Buying from Amazon would involve the complications of shipping back to the States for any repair. Not a trivial consideration especially given that Pixels have not had a glowing reputation for reliability. I am pretty tempted by the 4a. I need to replace my Sammy S5 and I dont want a phone that is any bigger. Getting anything under 6" that isnt junk or an Apple is tough. Also tempted by Apple but not that keen on being locked into Apple ecosystem. Only other option is last year's 10e so far as I can see.
