kiwitrc: Offline Maps

I have got offline Maps working so you can pre load a map of an area and not have to have a data connection to use it. I used Mobile Atlas Creator to select and download the maps I wanted and the RMaps app on the phone. Youtube has a tutorial on using Mobile Atlas Creator (MAC).

Read the read me in the MAC downlaod as you need to drop a sql file into the MAC folder.

Bit of dicking around but it seems to work fine so far.

Which map source did you pick for New Zealand?

ryan1019: i heard on the market that "My Backup Pro" is a great app for backing your apps,sim etc online but $5 us dollars. Surely soon one can transfer a app to the memory card. When you do a factory reset or firmware upgrade all is lost and back to the beginning again,annoying.

... works well but on a rooted phone... also take a look at Nandroid...

Am using an application called 'gremote' at the moment for queuing up episodes and movies on my home theater pc - works flawlessly! Basically uses the desire as a wacom pad. Can also use it as a game pad, but haven't tried that and don't need it

also using:
360 Live (xbox live sign in, use it to check who's online for gaming)
ACV (comic book reader)
Compass
CoPilot Live AU
ES File Explorer (connects to network devices nicely)
gameBoid
Goggles
Jewellust
NZ Tides
Sim checker pro
Speedx 3D
Toss it
Vignette (alternative camera)
World War (lame but my old man has it on his iphone and swears its good...)

Interesting...it doesn't seem to like downloading large number of tiles. I am trying to get a fairly detailed map of Canterbury downloaded - well, maybe even ChCh and surrounding towns - but even that got it complaining.

When I managed to get it going I got complaints about not being able to find certain tables in the SQLite DB. Can't quite remember the error message since I don't have it in front of me right now - did you encounter anything like that?

This HTC Desire is a data hog compared to the Nokia n95 gee surfing 2 pages nearly 1mb and with data rates gee whats the next best option?

Yeah it pays to not try and load too many zoom levels in at once. You can keep adding to the BigPlanet_maps.sqlitedb file the program generates so do bits at a time. I think I managed 40,000 tiles but not entirely sure.

I havent seen that error. I assume you have the sqlite_jni.dll file in the Mobile Atlas directory?

GameBoid is great eh!

I use Vignette too - I wouldn't use it over the inbuilt camera app though - you can import any of the pictures you take in the inbuilt app and then apply all the effects.

How is Jewellust?

Re: Customs ROMS - now a second. Nothing that compells me to flash to one though, so far each of them removes something that I use daily... I'm sure they will flow pretty freely from now though...

BTW, I note this morning in Paul's Twitter feed that the Rooting process is improved/easier now - there is a 10MB Linux ISO that you can use for the Linux bits! I'll probably get around to Rooting the phone over the weekend, will feedback how it goes. Fingers crossed I don't end up with an expensive paperweight :)

Delete your APN settings and just use WiFi... :)

Oh, meant to say that I'm a GRemote Pro user too - purchased it for my HD2 because I could bring the license over to Android. Excellent program - although I note if you want to confine yourself to say just controlling WinAmp, there are free ones available in the market.

Run.gps was another one purchased for WM that allows license porting, great program.

Always a good idea to check about license transfers!

I'm interested to see what differences rooting a phone makes. The only feature I really want from rooting my phone is to be able to utilise A2SD :D

Cheers, hopefully shouldn't need any luck eh?!

Every smartphone I own gets hacked/modded/flashed, so it doesn't feel too intrepid to me, still though, this is my first Android phone, and the first time in any new OS environment is a little unnerving...
