Hehe yeah, I'm really picky when it comes it little things like that :P

So it looks like it's a Froyo-wide mistake, and not just the custom ROM I have.

Thanks for checking, Mudwiggle!! :D

RevoWution:
Thanks for the clarification :) I knew there was something different between the 8183 and the 8181 haha ;)

Yeah....In NZ, A8181 is Vodafone / 2degrees and A8183 is Telecom XT.

It's the difference between "3G" UMTS 850 (A8183) and UMTS 900 (A8181).

Both support UMTS 2100.

All telcos in NZ do UMTS 2100....but if that was the only frequency you had going for you (as Telecom XT has no GSM) then you'd spend a lot of time out of coverage.

I am thinking of going with XT when I go back to New Zealand. In Auckland, XT wouldn't be a problem in terms of coverage. What is it like in the rural areas?

In the waikato, east of hamilton is good. West of Hamilton while driving through towards pirongia area there has the occasional no service, but not too bad.

Thanks eXDee. I just want to make sure that XT can outperform Vodafone on the HTC Desire in terms of coverage. TBH I don't really venture out of Auckland too much:)

Griggs, the stock 2.2 update you had for your A8131, does that include the HTC Sense addons?

Also the GPS works fine? Or was that what the addtional fix was for.

Did you get your A8131 from Mobicity or some where else?

Hi Deadpool

It was a Telstra 8183 but with the new ROM it thinks it is an 8181 now for what its worth.  Yes the new ROM has Sense and the usual HTC widgets (I like the new Newspaper widget BTW).

GPS has been a bit mixed.  Yesterday it locked straight away but tonight when running home from work it took a minute or more to lock even though according to GPS Test it said it coud see 10 sats.  I have only had this ROM on the phone for 3 days so will see if that was an aberration over the next few days.

If you go to the XDA Developers website there are a number of custom roms on there with a serveral just be being straight offical roms with no extras.  The great thing once rooted and if using ROM Manager is that it is easy to try several different roms until you find one you like.

Yes I got the phone from Mobicity.

I would be interested to know what other Telstra phone users who have rooted now use for a custom rom and if they have any problems.

Cheers

When you say, it thinks its an 8181, that doesn't effect the frequency range on it does it. I.e it will pick up 900MHZ instead of 850Mhz, i.e depending if the reason it works on different frequencies could be a file on the device with a specific codec.

The frequencies available are hardware dependent, not software. ie you cannot change from 900MHz to 850MHz by changing the installed software.

I think it's more to do with the phone's hardware configuration, and not so much the software. Otherwise the modders at XDA and/or MoDaCo would have already found a way to unlock the ability to use both 900 and 850 frequencies simultaneously by now.

I may be wrong though, so perhaps someone more knowledgeable can correct me :)

Yes the frequency is dependant on the chip, I think you'll find more and more phones being released will be able to handle all frequencies. The only phone currently able to is the iPhone I believe, wait until the technology becomes cheaper and more widespread and things will accelerate out into HTCs, Nokias and Samsungs.

Apps2SD+ is far superior to Froyo's pitiful Apps2SD :)
