Reading the Dick Smith page, they say goods would be covered by their custom charter which in my reading gives you warranty-level right of free repair for 2 years on goods over $500. Buying from Amazon would involve the complications of shipping back to the States for any repair. Not a trivial consideration especially given that Pixels have not had a glowing reputation for reliability. I am pretty tempted by the 4a. I need to replace my Sammy S5 and I dont want a phone that is any bigger. Getting anything under 6" that isnt junk or an Apple is tough. Also tempted by Apple but not that keen on being locked into Apple ecosystem. Only other option is last year's 10e so far as I can see.

I think we're on the edge of a few smaller phones being released. Samsung hasn't announced their latest range with a mini version, but I wouldn't be surprised to see one turn up later. I vaguely recall reading one of the up and coming type brands might be releasing one as well.

The Pixel 5 is also not too large, but more expensive than the 4a. I'm still really liking the 4a - compact, fast, good enough all round that I don't need a flagship.

Pixel 4a arrived today~. Still setting things up at the moment, but it feels nicer in my hand than the Nokia 7.2, by virtue of being skinnier and lighter...

So that was 10 days for that delivery, wasn't as bad as other things.

A little bit concerned about the USB-A to USB-C cable Dick Smith sent separately (to go with the NZ USB-A charger), as it takes a bit of convincing to get into the phone.

As for the phone itself, it's a G025N (or GA02099-UK? i dunno), from Ireland.

Get yourself another USB-C cable, they're fairly easy to find now. I mostly use my existing USB-C cables from Amazon.com, but the cable / charger Google supplies in the USA works well with an adapter. I know you're not meant to use it long term, I only use it occasionally.

Short answer: pretty good given the small size of the phone.

Longer answer: 3100mah isn't bad. I can easily get a day's usage out of it, but my usage is fairly light. I might get two days usage if I charged to 100% and let it get down to 20%, but I charge to 80% ish and prefer it doesn't go much below 40%.

Just to add to ordering on Dick Smith.

Ordered on the 26th Oct arrived on the 3rd Nov.

The phone seems quick, the dark mode is awesome.
Lots of comments in the office about the size being really good and most phones are too big.

Will report on the battery, but first day was really good.

Looking at ordering one. Im thinking Dick Smith seems the simplest. They seem to have an international version and a NZ/AU version. Any idea what the difference is?

I just visually compared the features. The only difference I could see is the international phone features changes from "Android 10 Built-in, USB Type-C" to "USB Type-C, Android 10 Built-in" - ie the order of the words changes. My best guess is the phone is identical but the box comes with a different charger. The USA charger from Amazon is fast, but you have to use an adapter which is generally not considered a good idea.

Yeah I figured it would be something to do with the charger/adapter.

I emailed Dick Smith and got this response:

The item atthis link or the global model is supplied from our international warehouse, meaning it may be an international product, which may have slight differences to Australian stock, but is genuine, guaranteed to work in Australia and is covered by our Customer Charter.

While the item at this link is made especially for Australian and New Zealand consumers.

Since all stock ultimately comes from the same factories, the main difference comes in the adapters for electronic devices we sell compared to those prepared for Australia. If the device is an international model it may arrive with a different charger, however, we will always provide an Australian compliant generic charger for local use.

It seems a little odd as the NZ/AU will come with a NZ/AU charger and then for the international one they will 'always provide an Australia compliant generic charger for local use'. Which sounds like the same thing to me??

What I was more worried about was them providing a plug adapter, rather than a AU/NZ charger.

Anyone that has ordered from Dick Smith - did you order the local or international model and did you get a compliant carger or have to use a plug adapter?

The international model will come with a generic USB charger, which probably isn't as good as the Google fast charger. They won't supply the US charger and a plug adapter as it's illegal.

The AU/NZ model may come with an NZ version of the Google fast charger in the box if you're lucky. I'd try that one. They work with any standard charger / fast charger so doesn't really matter, most people have plenty of chargers already.

Dick Smith is a brand owned by Kogan. They're the same company.

Amazon support is generally very good, but they wouldn't have any idea of consumer guarantees act and such.
