On other news... It appears HTC Desires and Nexus Ones are getting a major overhaul (don't know when). HTC have decided to ditch AMOLED and all subsequent Desires and N1's will be fitted with Super LCD screens...

Hmmm... Looks like I may be replacing my AMOLED Desire with a Super LCD Desire once they are available :P

EDIT: OMG it appears they are already available at Clove... I swear it used to say AMOLED when I bought my phone off them. Tempting, this is!! :)

I have noticed that sometime in the last 2-3 weeks Clove have changed the specs from AMOLED to SLCD in the Desire specs.

I'm extremely tempted to sell off mine and get one haha... My Desire doesn't have a very good battery life at all... Barely 1 full day with moderate usage.

Try switching from 3G to 2G - made a huge difference for me. Also, live wallpapers take a lot of juice so you might want to switch to a static one. (unless if you're showing off your phone, of course!).

My A8183 with leedroid 1.8 thinks its an A8181. Yet to upgrade to the new version.

From what I've heard so far, with regards to indoor visual quality anyways, LCD < AMOLED < SLCD < Super AMOLED.

Unfortunately they didn't test outdoors, under direct sunlight. I've personally had poor experiences with LCD and AMOLED under sunlight but Samsung's Super AMOLED's supposed to be the best of the lot. Not sure how it would perform though v/s the SLCD, but I doubt it'll be an issue anyways given that Super AMOLEDs are super rare right now..

I think the initial shock/surprise has subsided haha. Been reading some things about SLCD vs AMOLED, and you are right. Besides the battery life, there doesn't seem to be much advantage. AMOLED apparently even has better colour contrast and a wider viewing angle :) I think I'll stick with my now-limited edition AMOLED HTC Desire :P

Haha at least your Desire still recognises itself as a Desire. Mine's gone bonkers and thinks it's a Nexus One.

Just to move the topic off the screen discussion, I have a battery that's for the Nexus One, it does work in the Desire but it always shows as full so I suspect it's not 100% compatible with the Desire. Is there anything that can be done or should I just sell it on TradeMe?

That's odd... it should work fine. I'm using a MOMAX Nexus One replacement battery as a backup for my Desire and it works pretty well.

Open your phone dialer, punch in *#*#4636#*#* and check the battery info for anything unusual.

You could also try fully discharging the battery and then charge it again (through the phone). Also, make sure the contacts on the battery are clean and have no deposits on them.

That's a neat trick. Well, I checked and it just says:
Battery level: 100
Battery scale: 100
And I've been running the phone for several hours .

It is a Chinese knock-off from Singapore.
I'll just run it down and see what happens

In our office we have one AMOLED Desire and one Super LCD desire. The AMOLED is a bit more vivid. There was some drama when the Super LCD owner flashed Clockwork Recovery and an official HTC Chinese ROM on his Desire and found it didn't yet support Super LCD....so he booted into a back screen for both the recovery and the ROM. His phone worked - it rang when called - but the screen stayed completely black.

They started over and flashed a Modaco ROM with Super LCD support.

RevoWution: Ok it now appears that my phone thinks it's a Nexus One, and not a Desire. Pre-2.2, if I went to Settings --> About phone --> Phone identity, the Model number was an "HTC Desire".

Someone over at MoDaCo raised this issue, so I decided to check mine to see if I had this problem. I now have a "Nexus One" lol. Could anyone running stock, unrooted 2.2 check for me and see if their phones have confused their identities as well?

Lol if this is a Google/HTC bug, then it's shocking! :o

It's bad enough that the "embarrassed" emoticon has issues, and now this haha...

When I flashed the ROM I currently have on my Desire I got an email from Google congratulating me on buying a Nexus One. WTF I thought and when I checked the About Phone settings sure enough it said Nexus One.

When I looked at the thread I got the ROM from people had been complaining about the camera taking photos with a green tinge. Someone posted a fix and it changed my phone to a Desire. Apparently the problem was to do with the phone thinking it was a Nexus One.

Random.

Heh, after leaving it over night, it had powered down due to the battery having been drained. I plugged it into the charger and the battery indicator was showing incremental charge up until it reached 99. Then I unplugged the charger and now it's showing a full battery just as it was before and no decrease in power...

I guess I can use it as an emergency backup battery... it's just in order to charge it, I have to drain it completely...
