Are you talking about the Expert Infotech Chinese phone? I'm sure he probably can but in principle I would personally have the appropriate phone right from the start. Personally I don't think I should go through all the effort just to make my phone work as it was supposed to from the start, given that we don't live in a Chinese-speaking country.

Android user, software developer, a semi-typical (not a gamer) geek, and a Bernese Mountain Dog nut!

Yes I was, I guess it depends if he wants to fluff around trying to get a replacement, or fluff around trying a different ROM.

If it's a matter of principle, then yeah there's only one option :P

I guess I may as well have a go at rooting the Desire good learning curve. any suggestions on to good website that i can read up on doing this
From what I have read I have to root it now or I wont be able to do it after upgrade
One reason for rooting is that the
Desire does not support Enterprise-wpa2 Peap wifi in its current form which means it cannot be used in any decent wifi environments. Why anyone would sell a phone that cannot operate in a secure wifi area I dont know. Many universities use Enterprise wifi so must be a lot of mad Desire owners out there

There's just a new post on droid-den about rooting a Desire with HBOOT 0.80. http://www.droid-den.com/

They should have references to the procedure for the HBOOT 0.75 too. Make sure you work which procedure to follow.

I would go back to EInfotech and demand a refund...

The only time I dealt was pretty unpleasant. I was looking to get a red HTC Legend for my gf earlier this year, so I gave them a call as their website said they had them in stock. I gave them a call, and they confirmed that indeed they had it in stock. So I drove all the way to their shop that SAME afternoon, only to be told by the shop assistant that they sold out 2 days ago.

So they told me that they will get one by the end of the week, so I paid for it, and they even offered to courier it to me for free. End of the week, still no show. I give them another call, and they tell me that their supplier is out of stock overseas, and there is no specific ETA. I demand a refund, to which they willingly oblige (this may have been the only positive part of the entire transaction...)

Conclusion? They aren't very trustworthy, so I would be very careful when dealing with them... :| So in your case, I would ask for a refund. In case the phone is an unwanted/faulty second from overseas, which they are selling as a "new" one... :)

I bought my Desire from Expert Infotech too, and I have to admit, it was a thrilling experience. I've had a bad run-in with them once before when they were based in Birkenhead, and did not really look forward to dealing with them again - but the Desire was really cheap.

At any rate, my Desire came from Southeast Asia too, and when I asked they said it came from Singapore. I'm not having any issues with strange chinese characters being put in, though. Have you tried using a different keyboard? If not I really recommend you try using one of the newer SlideIT/Swype/etc keyboards... that's what I'm doing.

I'm also not getting the HTC OTA update though... despite repeated attempts at checking for updates. At this stage I'm just about ready to root it just for Froyo.

I've bought 2 Desires and a Legend from them so far, no weird issues. As far as I know all of ours have come through Singapore.

I may have mislead people by the chinese characters bit. On my Desire when I am composing a message I have a key second in from left bottom which swaps between english and what I presume is chinese. The key has abc on it or an ideogram If I hit this key by accident it still gives the english typing with the predicitive word in a small box but also gives chinese ideograms as well which when you are typing quickly can be confusing. A slip of a finger and you get all these chinese characters. I think the phone probably does come from Singapore as all the locale settings are based around the far east area with no actual standard english. I am using English Singapore for want of a better option.
I am hoping that if I root phone and get a standard english based rom I will get rid of all the far east options.
Does that sound reasonable

By the way I am not getting the 2.2 update either. I think I read on a forum somewhere that HTC would not be rolling out the Singapore updates till November I dont think I could wait that long.
By the way as I understand it if you have a gold card you can replace the roms without rooting the phone. BUT once you go to 2.2 you can not root the phone. To date no one has managed to root a 2.2. So if you think you might like to root the phone at some stage then do it before you upgrade. Then it wont matter

- My Desire was imported from Hong Kong and I faced the same "problem" you did. You can simply fix it by
1) Changing your locale to "English (New Zealand)"
2) Using a different keyboard, like the default Android keyboard or the HTC IME Mod

- You *can* actually root the phone now even if you go for 2.2 or have one of those new SLCD phones.

- Personally I would recommend rooting and getting a custom ROM, primarily because of A2SD+ - all apps will be automatically installed to the SD card. Without A2SD+, you'll run out of space on your phone real soon, especially if you install a couple of big games / programs.

No I cannot change to English new Zealand as it's not an option
I only have around six locales and they are all English Singapore or English vietnam
Etc. Only countries in far east are Included no New Zealand
Not sure I understand your comments about keyboards how do I change them

Try going through the Android Market and looking for SlideIT or something similar. Download and install, and change your keyboard to whatever you downloaded through the settings.
