ronw: No I cannot change to English new Zealand as it's not an option
I only have around six locales and they are all English Singapore or English vietnam
Etc. Only countries in far east are Included no New Zealand
Not sure I understand your comments about keyboards how do I change them

My post contains links, so click on them and check them out :)

Locales can be changed using the "MoreLocale2" program. As for changing the keyboard, open any program that contains a text field like say "Internet" or "Messages". Press and hold your finger on the text field until a popup menu appears. In that menu, choose "Input method". From this screen, you can change to a different onscreen keyboard, like the default Android keyboard. If you install the HTC IME Mod keyboard then you could choose it this way.

You need to activate the particular keyboard first before it shows up in the "Input method" list when you long-press in a text input box :)

So if you haven't done so, go to "Settings", then "Language & Keyboard", and make sure the keyboard you want to use is checked/ticked. I believe the "Language & Keyboard" menu is quite different in 2.1, and I forget what the exact options are, as it's been a while since I ran 2.1, but from memory, any new keyboard you install must be activated/ticked here first :)

I remember installing Swype, only to find it wasn't in the "Input Method" menu, and having to turn it on from the "Language & Keyboard" menu.

Have done that only keyboards available are Thai and Chinese I am adding the slide keyboard and it has appeared in keyboards and yes that does get rid of the keyboard. Unfortunately it's only a demo so I will have to see how it goes and if necessary purchase the paid slider
Bit of a pain to hAve to buy a keyboard because the Desire does not have a standard English keyboard

I just tried out the Droid 2 Multi-touch keyboard port for the Desire and it absolutely knocks the socks off any IME I've tried so far! The speed is just unbelievable - I was able to type over 40WPM with it, without making any mistakes!

Looks a bit simple for my liking hehe :) I really like how each key on the HTC IME has a second function when you long-press a particular key. Plus, I'm not sure if this will work with my MCR ROM.

The HTC IME MOD keyboard is my favourite hands down. Just so customisable (from vibration length, keypress sound volume, custom smileys and the all-important (imo anyway hehe) smiley key, and then some) :)

Btw for those of you on LeeDrOiD : v1.9a is out! Finally our Desire beats FroYo Nexus One! Check out the benchmark:

I've started seeding already. If you see someone from NZ and on KTorrent, you know who it is. ;)

On a related note, for all Desire users - check out the new radio - 32.44.00.32u_5.09.05.30_2 !
Better WiFi and Cell strength, and less-laggy 720p video recording!

That looks promising :) My MCR r8 ROM is just below the Nexus One 2.2 benchmark.

Looks like I need to do a full re-wipe and re-flash the ROM as well... My HTC Calendar app suddenly stopped showing any events for one of my calendars. It's showing up fine on Google Calendar on computer. It's just refusing to show on my phone... :(

Anyone else have this problem before?

hi
im in the same boat with the whole asian keyboard, i can get it to go away and only offer english words but sometimes it reverts back.. annoying.
i am thinking of rooting the phone this weekend, does the handset have to be cracked to install these keyboards mentioned above? i could be tempted to leave it unrooted and wait for the ota upgrade2.2 if i can fix the keyboard issue..

On another note, i have been investigating searching these forums etc for APN settings for mms. i have added APN excatly as noted in these threads. much to my dissappointment i could not recieve or send a pxt...
any other opinions on APNS or other such settings?

Cheers
Mark

If you get 2.2 via OTA you'll still have the asian keyboard.

Yes, the phone has to be rooted (it's not the same as cracking or unlocking!) if you want to install the Droid 2 keyboard, but the HTC IME Mod ,  Swiftkey, Swype etc can work on any normal phone too. Also, do install MoreLocale2 so that you can change the system locale to EN (NZ) - note that this won't have any effect on the keyboard, but will influence all other apps that makes use of your locale.

+1 on the MMS settings btw, I'm in the same boat as you are. ;) I spoke to a 2degrees tech and he gave me all the settings but MMS still won't work.

I may have to download that tonight, currently I only beat  out the Droid X on my desire.

Question when you flash it, does the market place remember applications you have downloaded, i.e I've brought one paid app will it remember that and let me redownload it.

Yes, the market is tied to your Google account so it'll remember your download and purchase history.

If you keep flashing ROMs frequently though, do take a look at Titanium Backup for easy backup/restore of your apps+data. Best $3.99 I ever spent! (The paid version has a fully-automatic restore feature)
