I'm always keen to get an OS upgrade and have been waiting for KitKat with some interest - it's now on my One - a birthday present from Telecom and HTC.

Although I have been looking forward to it, I'm not sure why because I did not have any real understanding of what the big differences/improvements would be over JB, so while it was downloading I googled the differences on the iPad.

Given that I am by no means a power user it seems to me that most of the improvements are 'under the hood' efficiency gains and there are no, or not many, big obvious UI changes. Keen to hear more and to be corrected on this.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

The most obvious UI change would be for apps that support it to colour the status bar to match the app's action bar.

Android 4.4 comes with some significant improvements to performance, reliability and battery life over 4.3.

Just updated mine. Flawless update. As mentioned by others, no major changes to the eye but everything does seem smoother.

Hmmm, noticed something annoying since the update. I use Airdroid to txt and generally manage my HTC-One from my PC. Since the update, txt messages still show up as unread on both my PC and the HTC-One - I have to go to the One and "read" the txts before they are "read" on the desktop Airdroid as well.

I just tested Airdroid on mine and found the same thing. I don't normally use it to manage texts, but I can see how that would be annoying. I'm on ver 2.9. It looks like a few people have noted the bug in the forums already, so hopefully it will be patched.

Only things I have noticed so far are the color loss in the battery indicator and that it asked me if I wanted to make handcent my default messaging app. Mind you its sitting on the charger at the moment so haven't had too much of a play.

edit: and tap and pay added in nfc menu.

So is this update based on the kikat update that was pulled in Europe, or the second one with the wifi bug fixed? I'm hoping it is the latter. There has to be an advantage to being well down the queue!

It will be later, it was sent to carriers for testing after the Europe build was pulled. It has a higher release number as well 4.20 vs 4.19.

Has the whole status bar gone monochrome? I notice the Beats Audio logo and wifi signal indicator are both white now too, instead of red and blue, respectively.

Third party notifications can still be colour. Anything generated by the OS, or HTCs interpretation of it, seem to be monochrome. All part of 'minimalist' Kitkat I guess.
As someone who wears reading glasses I prefer a bit more colour so I don'thave to find my specs to know my battery is 'in the red'.
