jonathan18: ... - have any 7 plus owners had problems with the audio quality of the main mic? ...

No mic issues here, unless I use a headset. !Bluetooth! is the reason I am seeing red!

huckster: As for the update (and two subsequent security updates), smooth as, but apart from that.... meh.. ...

Agreed. Icons have changed slightly, sounds have also changed ever so slightly. Bonus is the daily updating wallpaper.

Received this today (although some of you know this already):

HMD Global, the home of Nokia phones, today announces that Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 6.1 are the latest Nokia smartphones to join the Android 10 roll out1. This means that four Nokia smartphones in New Zealand have received the latest Android OS since its official launch – delivering on the promised roll-out timings and more importantly the commitment to keeping Nokia smartphones secure and up-to-date across the range.

Nokia smartphones maintain their position as leaders in fast OS updates and are once again at the forefront of the latest Android 10 deployment. Nokia smartphones are part of the Android One programme, launching with a promise of three years’ worth of guaranteed monthly security updates and two years of OS upgrades.

Android 10 is the second OS update for the devices, consolidating HMD Global’s commitment to Nokia phones getting better over time with consistent software upgrades and new features. As of today Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 6.1, Nokia 7.1 and Nokia 9 PureView are all upgraded to Android 10 in New Zealand.

Fans will get to experience a whole host of new features with Android 10, including:

● Gesture Navigation: control of your Nokia smartphone just got slicker, with faster and more intuitive controls at your fingertips
● Smart Reply: receive even smarter responses in messages, not just wording but actions you can take
● Privacy Controls: have even more control of your personal data all in one place, and control when your location is shared with your apps – be that always, just while in use, or never
● Focus mode: block out distracting apps when you need to concentrate on what’s important (try it now in Beta)
● Family Link: now part of the Digital Wellbeing settings, helping parents set digital ground rules for the whole family

Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 6.1 smartphones will receive the Android 10 roll-out from today across New Zealand.

As much as I like Sailfish OS which I'm currently using, the development hasn't progressed to the extent I expected it would.

I'm thinking about my next phone and Nokia is a brand that's on my list.

One area that is important to me is the email and calendar integration as I use the calendar on my phone for all of my appointments, syncing back to my laptop and tablet.

What email client is used on the Nokia phones? Is it GMail or another client altogether. I have never been a GMail fan because of the way it intrudes and assumes you want to link to various Google functions. Because of this I would wish to avoid using it if at all possible. I know it's possible to download other clients from the Playstore but these clients do not normally integrate with the phones calendar. Since my calendar is tied to an email account I need what ever email client I use to work with the calendar.

To give an example my Samsung tablet has a GMail option but it also has a Samsung option as well.

I kind of guess since Nokia is pure Android it may only offer GMail, I hope not.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks

Yes, that's one of the downsides of vanilla Android phones, the Google suite is pretty lacking if you're outside of that ecosystem. Gmail is a rubbish email app IMO.

On vanilla/Android One devices, email = Gmail, calendar = Google calendar. Which email/sync type is the account you want to use? Exchange? CalDAV?

Thankfully this is Android, everything is modular, you can mix and match almost any mail client and calendar app you like. I highly recommend Nine, best mail client I've ever used on any platform + integrates with whatever your default calendar app is. It's a spendy app, but there's a free trial - and once you've bought it, you're free to be brand-agnostic and always have a reliable mail+calendar experience.

Thanks Nik,

I use both Exchange and CalDAV.

I don't mind spending money on an app that does the job and one with a free trial is a really good way to see it it does the job. I'm very happy to support a developer that provides that option.

Looks like I won't be stranded if I go the Nokia route

I'm pleased I'm not alone in my dislike of GMail.

Knowing what email service provider you are using we can recommend other clients. GMail is obviously the client of choice if your provider is Google.

I suggest trying Microsoft Outlook instead of Gmail.

If you want a calendar app I use a app called OneCalendar.  It's a stand alone app that can link back to  many type of email accounts.  Mine links back to Gmail and Outlook calendars.

Thank you, I have used Outlook on a Nokia N1 android tablet and I quite liked it except that it didn't integrate with the calendar. Perhaps that's different now or in the case of the Nokia phones.

On the N1 I ended up running two clients, one which integrated with the calendar for syncing appointments but didn't use for email and Outlook for the email functions. A bit messy but it worked.

The Outlook calendar is really good and has widgets you can use - unless you have another account that must only use the Android calendar.

It was a while ago now that I used Outlook bit if I recall my bugbear was that it was a two step process to get to the calendar, having to open Outlook first rather than being able to go directly to the calendar from an icon. Also no doubt Outlook has improved since then.
