Dingbatt: It sounds kind of terminal. Very occasionally my M7 just won't start up. Even though it has a full charge it acts as though it is dead flat. I put it on its original HTC charger for about 5 minutes and then do a hard reboot by holding the power button down for about 30 seconds (until capacitive buttons have lit up, gone dark again and then after a pause the phone buzzes and starts up).

You indicated a reboot to recovery attempt with the volume buttons, but I too had no luck when I tried that.

Yeah should be under warranty still as its under 2 years old.

Of recent my M7 had been suffering terrible battery life going from 100% at breakfast to less than 20% by mid afternoon. Initially I thought it might have been the inclusion of Android Wear and a smartwatch but uninstalling made no difference. It was also getting quite warm.
Using GSam Battery Monitor, AppOps, Wake lock Detector and Greenify I decided to get aggressive with some of the apps and settings. Heaps of apps were wakelocking for no good reason and others accessing location for no useful purpose. Some were ones that I thought I had throttled initially, but may have been reset by updates. There was a widget (part of HD Widgets) that was wake locking and locating even though it wasn't in use on any home screen.
So at the moment my phone is going from 100% at breakfast to 50% when I go to bed. I admit that is with light use. I am not lighting it up to check the time or for incoming texts because my smartwatch takes care of that. It also runs much cooler.
Just like a windows PC I think my M7 had become 'bunged up' and reminded me that I periodically need to have a closer look at the installed apps and what they might be doing in the background.
Might mean I can put off buying an M9 (or not).

Bit disappointed that the M7 won't be getting the update to 5.1 which, as far as I can tell, is only a bug fix. Don't really care about sense 7 for the M7 but I would like as bug free a base as possible. Yet another example of why OS/OEM skin/carrier need to be separate from each other.
Waiting patiently for the 5.0.2 update though.

So I got a replacement but I kind of want to sell it now as it's technically new. How much are they going for these days?

I have had Lollipop since December last year, I know i will receive 5.1 (and maybe even further updates), at no point has my two year old handset ever been more than a few weeks away from having the latest version of Android, the same cant be said for even last year's flagships

A lot can be said for the GPe program, pity it was tied into a relatively small market and died a natural, now that Google has a more universal device store I question if such a program would be substantially more successful, maybe GPe was the precursor for the fabled Android Silver program and maybe the best is yet to come

Just read an article on the M7 update scenario, that's ugly, if i read it right, the M7 (sense version) is now end of line, it will be stuck on 5.0.2 for eternity?

True, i was fortunate enough to receive a device that was already S-Off so did not have that drama

Same here. Mine isn't S-Off, so GPE not a player at the moment. And I can't afford to brick it by having a go at S-Off.
I am hoping our carriers are looking closely at the reports of bugs and will make sure the update is "fit for purpose" because it seems the 5.0.2 update can reportedly produce a phone that doesn't receive calls or texts, can't connect to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, sucks the battery dry in 4 hours and the alarm doesn't work on. Grounds for a claim under the CGA of it happens? I don't mind if it takes a little longer for carrier testing and approval, as long as the update doesn't leave me with an unreliable paper weight.

By my calculations a $1000 phone that is 'obsolete' after 2 years has cost me about 10 bucks a week.

Is it still under the 2 year warranty? you could give S-OFF a go, if it bricks they will still replace it.

I don't think that is in the spirit of what the warranty is for.
If the HTC update made it unusable that would be different.
However, the latest I have read is Mo Versi tweeting that they won't leave M7 users with a bug ridden OS.

I see that the VF AU website has the 5.0.2 update status for the m7 as;

"Technical acceptance granted. Awaiting rollout"

Anybody in the know at 2D, Spark or VF NZ that are in the know care to comment on the status of the M7 here since it is the same ROM version?

Does the status mean that it will begin when HTC have enough server space?

Wasn't really bothered but am having second thoughts about the M9 because of less than favourable camera reviews.
