Solves the question of when/whether I was going to install it....

Update to 7.21.980.22 has just arrived and installed. Bug fixes and optimisations it says. But now that it has installed the phone appears to be stuck on the splash screen. I am being patient but it has been like it for 15 minutes which seems a little excessive for a bug fix.
Will leave it a bit longer then try to reboot it.

Yikes, thanks for letting us know. I'll hold off until you've had success ;)

I didn't think that HTC was doing any more updates, so it's good to know that they are still doing bug fixes and (I assume) security patches. As long as they work of course...

Well it didn't work. Sat on the boot screen for about 40 minutes. Tried a soft reboot. Nah. Other people's experiences may be different because my phone is rooted. But I did use the stock recovery before applying the update. It appeared to install normally but then stalled on reboot.
Luckily I had a nandroid of the system prior to the update and was able to restore it. So I will wait a while and maybe have another go when I get back from a few days away.
Bit of a shame really because it is running really well at the moment, sipping power to such an extent that I am finishing the day with 50% battery (7am to 10pm,) which I wasn't before. However I haven't reloaded Xposed since my factory reset and that probably has a lot to do with it.

Been about two months since updating and still having wifi issues (several dozen drop outs a day). Go to reconnect and phone will constantly freeze up on the Wifi settings page. Can take 10 minutes to finally get it back.

5.0.2 has been an absolute abortion on my phone. Will be replacing it sometime very soon.

I've replaced my 5.1GPE M7 with the Smart Ultra, the battty life on the M7 is just not great anymore after a little over a year.

For example it would get to 20% battery and turn off...not great!

Almost sounds familiar! I've passed my M7 on to wifey and also bought an ultra although the M7 is still holding good charge. The ultra is a ridiculously good phone for the money, to be honest I will probably sell the m7 to fund a second ultra :P

My wife is still using her M7 which runs out of battery by midday. I am having trouble convincing her that the Ultra is better. She apparently wants a phone that is metal even though she uses a case.

Yesterday i got 15+hours out of a single charge including 4hrs & 17mins of screen on time, that is without any battery saving measures in place, screen set relatively bright, all background syncing/GPS/WiFi/Bluetooth/etc all on, I would say that with a more frugal approach you could easily get 2~3 days in real world terms if need be

The Smart Ultra is a surprisingly good phone, I'm sure that after a day or two she will soon forgive the plastic housing. To be honest it doesn't really feel any slower than the M7. Comparing to my daughters 2nd gen Moto G which sort of draw the line in the sand for budget performance the Ultra is twice as good literally at the same pricepoint

So this is now the 'get a smart ultra' thread?

In my experience battery life degrading is a fact of life. My old iPhone gets half a day on a charge. Most of today's better phones will also degrade over the next year and a half. This is compounded by app spam, and poor app maintenance... Not prepping for upgrades correctly and the real killer... Constant overcharging...

I try to charge my m7 in the 50 to 60% sweet spot. Battery life has degraded over 2 years, but I tend to find my afternoon charge at work still lasts till the next afternoon charge at work, unless I have a night out using the camera a lot or have to sit waiting for a few hours and chrome the hell out of it.

Of course, I would have upgraded already, except the current generation of flagships haven't really pushed the game far enough, or adequately upgraded my favourite things about the m7. So I'm skipping this generation

I got my M7 when the prices came down just as the M8 first came out.  I still get well over a day out of it, unless I use it heavily in the evening (e.g. a couple of hours solid web browsing while the wife insists on watching the Living Channel).  I skipped the M8 as I didn't think it was enough of an upgrade, and was going to get the M9, but once the M7 got lollipopped (and I figured how to get the restaurant SPAM off my Blinkfeed and lockscreen), the M7 is still so good I still can't justify spending another $1100.

Maybe when the M10 comes out and the M9 prices drop, my battery life will have declined to the point where it's worth it laughing
