kiwitrc: Looking at Play Store, Cerberus appears to be free now?

The app itself is free, but the lifetime subscription is not - you get 7 or 14 days free trial on first signup. I forget which.

Disrespective: Does anyone have a 2D rom link to help me remove root? I'm having issues with 3g connectivity and want to make sure it's the phone before returning it. Virtual beers and karma are the price I'll pay...

To remove root is to do a factory reset.
Keep an eye out for sammobile site.

You'll need to do more than removing root for warranty purposes.

System Settings > About Device > Device Status - scroll to the bottom, you'll see that it labels your phone "modified".  That's because of root.

According to Chainfire, you're going to have to flash a stock ROM in order to remove that status.  Triangle Away wont do the job, it will only reset the flash count.

And there's no 2D stock ROM on SamFirmware.  I keep checking.  I've got to take mine back this weekend for exchange.

I'm going to flash the Vodafone Stock Firmware, it's the best I can do.  But it wont give me the 2D CSC.

Lokhor kindly sent me some instructions for extracting the CSC but I've not looked at this thoroughly.  I will say it involves a lot of steps, and preferably another S3 on 2D you can grab stuff from.

I've got a Nandroid of the stock 2D firmware with the Ninphetamine kernel - could you flash that, and then just flash the stock kernel via Odin?

Or are Nandroid backups like toothbrushes - best not shared? Tongue Out

I'm not sure but will try and find out. I'm not really clued up on the intricacies of roms and kernels enough to know for sure.

My phone status doesn't mention anything about being modified but the Root apps remain and so does root privileges.

jeffnz: I use cerberus the version for rooted phones, its very good and cheap about $9.00 for life time license and I think 5 devices

Prey is free for up to three devices. Luckily I haven't had to really 'put it to the test'.

On a related note, here's a blog post from someone who lost their iPhone and their experience tracking it down with Find My Friends, interesting read: http://www.teamdf.com/blog/lost-found-my-iphone/169/

Have you tested Prey to make sure it works?  Several months ago I loaded it on my old HTC Magic and tried to get it working but not once did it every work 100%.  The Samsung Dive locator service has so far worked every time I've tried it (once I got my phone number entered in the proper format!)

How to unroot S3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEsBwtqY2xE

I haven't watched this, but it claims to remove root and return to stock. You will still need the 2D ROM and kernel of course.

I've got a Nandroid of my phone, but it was rooted when I took it.  Forgive my ignorance, but don't you need to be rooted in order to get a Nandroid backup, or was it via ADB?

I figure there's no gain in my flashing my backup, it'll still show my phone as "modified", even when I flash stock kernel in Odin.

You need a Linux computer or Cygwin installed on Windows computer to emulate the linux behaviours and commands.

I think I worded that badly.  I know you need root for a Nandroid.  I was wondering if there was a way to grab a backup of the ROM via ADB, eliminating the need to root the phone.

Of course I might completely off track and should have just rolled over this morning instead of getting out of bed :)

Do you actually need root for Nandroid to function?  Or just CWM recovery (which contains the backup functionality)?

I think you look at it the wrong way here.

CWM Recovery has the functions but CWM requires Super User permission to be able to read and write root system files.

Even with Nandroid back up is done, you can't restore it back without root permissions. So what is the good of having Nandroid if you can't restore? Well it is only good for those who wanting to restore when they have many customROMs to play with.

I hope this is clearing up!
Linux uses "su" or "sudo" to gain access to system files.

Windows uses system permission and local administrator group. But to be able to access strict system files then users have to login as Local Administrator account.

Mac uses the same as Linux because it is based on unix.

That 'fix' is just to correct the amount of battery usage being displayed in Settings > Battery so that Cell standby is displaying the correct drain values.

Yep it will fixed that overly high usage of reported by Framework. But hey placebo effect is always a good thing too lol.
