Buying a tablet would be a hell of a lot easier if Android OEMs were any good at pre-release hype. Still no release date for the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 locally.

I'd find it hard to believe that Noel Leeming has stock and literally no other retailer does.

Seriously, that'd be messed up.

My Transformer TF101 is still going strong and working well, on ICS. I never bothered with the dock but it'd be good for people who want an email/web machine.

10" is on the large side for portability and reading, but 7" is perhaps slightly small.

I've just bought a TF101 after asking myself for years whether I needed one or not and I have to say I wish Id done it earlier !

If you're just looking for something to tide you over you could do a lot worse, I'm still kicking myself for missing out on a 32Gb one with dock which went for 400 last night.

I have an original Galaxy Tab (7"), which I find ideal for e-booking, couch-surfing, and on the go email or weekends away. Found it on TradeMe for a V/good price and despite the fact it's on Gingerbread it copes with my uses. Bonus over a Nexus 7 is it's also a 3G device and has an SD slot, although it doesn't have the processing power or resolution.

Also have a Galaxy Tab 8.9 in the house. Better resolution and display size are appealing and it's manageable as an e-reader, I certainly wouldn't want larger. I think it's an under rated device.

If you're set on the Surface why not look for a used Tab 7+ (or 8.9 or something else) until the product becomes a real option??

Anyone had issue with web surfing on Android tablet?

I just watched a video on youtube, and web browsing doesn't look as smooth as it could be...

Even my old TF101 is ok for web surfing. It's not like a PC, but it's cheaper, smaller, and more portable. Works fine for casual stuff.

Got a Vigo for the other half on the weekend (to help her track her diabetes)

the battery is terrible on wifi...45mins if you're lucky...already taken one unit back so it appears not just to be a dodgy unit.

I've got another boxchips 7" come from China this week so we'll see how they compare

Luckily for her she doesn't care about surfing on (that's what the Ipad is for)

technicaljoe: Campoki: Would you consider a Nexus 7?

The greatest thing about having a tablet is its portability and convenience, but turning it into a semi workstation is also important.

No I wouldn't consider this, as I find that a tablet really needs a keyboard dock, that is if you want to write notes. I find the touch screen keyboard isn't efficient enough for this task. Sure you could purchase a seperate bluetooth keyboard, but I seem to find that a keyboard that comes with the tablet is just much more convenient.

Therefore I recommend the previous options, TF 300 or wait for the 700.

Depends on how much typing you're going to use your tablet for :P

Also the nexus only comes with a maximum of 16GB of internal storage and no option for more, unlike the Transformer series which come in 32 and 64GB's and also has the availability to put in memory cards, in case you need it.

I think it'll pay off if you wait for the Nexus 7 to hit the NZ market, even if you are not planning to buy it. With Nexus 7 in the picture, I believe the competition (caused by the Nexus price and sales) will drive the market of android tablets into one direction, cheaper prices.

If I am correct and with the prices of tablets drop as per my theory, the comparison then will be more fair. Theoretically, and currently, there is just a big price gap that will make the Nexus's value (quality / price) much higher than its competitors.

Bottom line, I would wait for the Nexus, even if I am not planning to buy it.

Has anyone heard when the TF700 might hit our shores?

I was hoping to pic one up when I am in Sydney in August for a week, but Asus has said the release in Aus has been delayed (it was supposed to be early / mid July on the shelves - now mid Aug?)

I just don't know if I should just get the TF201, wait for the 700, or go for the plastic 300 (which I'm not so much a fan of after playing with it in Noel Leeming)

From what I know it'll probably depend what week you're over there
