turnin: Amazing. what sort of range do they have. are there such things as public tags. could i put one on my car keys to locate them. what about traffic on the road passing each other......

NFC stands for Near Field Communication - and is designed to operate over a few centimetres.

ajobbins: Can they be set to that a certain action continues while the tag is in range only?

Could I have have on on a certain spot on my desk that makes my phone silent, but as soon as I take my phone away from the tag the sound turns on again?

With the app I use, NFC Task Launcher, the best I could was to set up a switch, wipe once it does something, wipe again and it goes back

There is a game that uses NFC tags as part of the game functionality.

They started off just using QR codes which you scanned and have just added NFC

You can get an iPhone version where you wave the iPhone over the sticker and it does nothing.

So, will I be able to scan the RFID tags on my cows with these phones? Basically it's the same standard isn't it?

Or play them Mozart while they're at the drinking trough....I love messing with the heads of cows.

This is similar to what I want to do to with my S3, to activate Bluetooth (and handsfree) when I jump in the car and then swipe it when I get out to deactivate it.

Tried that on the NAIT tag already, did not register anything.

What apps are people using, I ordered some tags and they have arrived so want to have a play with them but absolutely no idea what I'm doing so being the stereotypical kiwi male I'm not reading up much on them

Look up and install NFC Task Launcher available from Play Store and start from there. That will give you ;plenty of ideas on what to do.

Something I just found out, the antenna for NFC devices is mostly (Not sure if this is always) located in the battery,

This means if you buy a second or replacement battery for your phone, you'll need to check that the battery does indeed come with an NFC antenna.

For example I see that the 'known' battery supplier Mugen Power has an NFC antenna in their Samsung Galaxy S III replacement batteries.

I now see that some Chinese 'no Name' replace batteries now indicate they have NFC support. But at $7.00 one probably wouldn't be buying them for their quality.

So just something to consider with NFC capable devices when changing batteries.

And No, placing a battery noted as NFC into your phone without the phone already having an NFC chip doesn't give you NFC.

The Galaxy Nexus has the NFC antenna in the battery. The Nexus S doesn't which is strange given they are both made by Samsung. No idea about the S3. I purchased a spare battery for my GN and it's a genuine Samsung so it also has the antenna.

1eStar: Can you get implantable ones ;-) What about one in the palm of your hand!

You can get implantable RFID tags under the skin, eg. touch the side of your car with your hand to unlock the car. Not sure if RFID uses the same protocol as NFC or not.
