Basically, you won't be able to replicate the Outlook look and feel on an Android device.

You can use the built in mail app for your @xtra mail but it won't/can't stay in sync with the Outlook on the PC.

Sorry I disagree. There are clients out there that work perfectly well.

I use both tablet and phone versions of Android for my business devices - I use Touchdown as the mail client and don't have any such issues - both tablet and phone syncronise fine and very happy with it.

I am able to get everything outlook offers from the exchange server and just the same as an Iphone or Windows phone can do. While it does not have the "outlook" feel Touchdown is fine at doing what its meant to do!

Phone is a Galaxy 2 (ICS) and tablet is Asus TF700 (JB)

You do not need a Windows or Iphone to run a decent mail client - just choose the right one!

Cheers

Simon

ajobbins: Who is the mail provider now (that she uses in Outlook)?

This is the most important question. If the provider is using Exchange, and the user likes Outlook, I'm sorry to say Android is not for her.

If the account is on Exchange Server you will find out the ActiveSync implementation on Android is flimsy. Seriously, every single Android device I've seen does one thing different.

Not a single device using the built-in accounts manager synchronises (on schedule or push) folders other than Inbox. Some Android devices do not synchronise calendar entries, while others do it pretty well.

I found only one device that would synchronise Task, and even so marking a Task item as completed on Exchange would not propagate to this Android device. Actually, it would propage FROM the Android device TO Exchange every single time after the initial sync. This means tasks marked as completed on Exchange would appear as incomplete once that Android device synchronised. A pain.

If you want PERFECT Exchange reconciliation, multi folder push synchronisation, then get a Windows Phone. Or an iPhone.

Another option is migrating her to Gmail, and using Outlook to access GMail via IMAP - that way she gets to keep the desktop experience whilst having the mobile (and other) advantages of Gmail.  When she eventually works out that Outlook is rubbish and she's happier with Gmail, it's no big deal.

Things you'd have to do:
a) Add her GMail account as an IMAP account in Outlook
b) Transfer across her existing folders into the Gmail IMAP account
c) Set her GMail account (via the web interface) to retrieve her presumably POP3 ISP email.  You can also set whether to send via Gmail or ISP email here
d) Once you're happy that everything is transferred across, backup/delete the PST file associated with her previous Outlook mail account (since everything is now uploaded into Gmail).
e) You may have to export/import contacts separately (can't recall how I did it off the top of my head, but it's not difficult).

Thanks for all the advice. Basically, the stock email client works well enough that she is going with that for the moment.

Just make sure to set it to not delete off the server (there's a check box in settings) otherwise if she downloads it on her phone it won't turn up on her PC.
