I had a very similar problem in the past. It was the cable I was using.
What cable are you using? Is it the one that was given with your phone?

Try using the cable that came with the phone, it was in some forums that said about this and bang it worked for me ..

Have you tried downloading the pit file and selecting repartition?

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

Check md5 on downloaded files.

Seriously.

Until you do this, everything else is pointless.

Use the OEM cable that came with your phone and try the process again.
I spent a whole night troubleshooting a very similar issue on my S3 and the cable change worked.
I was using a Blackberry cable and swapped to Samsung and it made difference. I will soon post the forum link for this issue i am talking about.

Enable USB Debugging option from the Android Development menu. This is a very important step and without this option enabled ODIN will not flash the new firmware.
Also, make sure that you have the latest Samsung USB Drivers. You can install them using KIES or you can choose to download them from these links: Samsung USB drivers for Windows 64-bit ( x64) OS | Samsung USB drivers for Windows 32-bit (x86) OS.

Connect your Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone to your PC using the original USB cable. Odin must to show ‘added!!’ alert in the Odin message box. Note: If the ‘added!!’ message doesn’t appear, then you need to reinstall the Samsung USB drivers and enable the USB debugging option on the S3 device again.

It's easy to check the MD5 of a file.

You download the file. You download this nice free Windows MD5 shell extn

You right click on the file you've downloaded and verify the MD5Sum the Shell Extension tab calculates is the same as the MD5 the file is supposed to have.

Tada, you know the huge file you downloaded is perfect.

If one bit of the is changed from the original, the hash will be totally different and you know you've got a corrupt download.

It's not technical, it's extremely simple and basic.

How is the OP supposed to do this when they can't boot the phone?? Having this option ticked would make no difference flashing a firmware from Download mode

Ok, I've tried a few times and this is all Odin says

<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..
<ID:0/004> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/004> Initialzation..
<ID:0/004> Set PIT file..
<ID:0/004> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
<ID:0/004> Get PIT for mapping..

And it just hangs there. I left it for about 20 minutes and nothing

I also tried running it on a virtual XP machine. Same problem

Do you know what this issue might be?

UPDATE: Tried the same thing on Odin V1.85 and I get this instead

According to the OP that posted on XDA developers, if the 3 part firmware with re partition fails then the phone is really bricked

Ok... I just wanted to point out something here. Flashing roms even if fails does NOT brick phones/tablets. Only boot loader changes does, which is not included in the typical ROM flashing. Something like Triangle away can ACTUALLY brick your phone as it is changing records of the Boot Loader.

Please do correct me if I am wrong, while I believe this is to be the Truth, nothing but the truth so help me Raa :D
