Until you do this, everything else is pointless.

What cable are you using? Is it the one that was given with your phone?
Try using the cable that came with the phone, it was in some forums that said about this and bang it worked for me ..

Use the OEM cable that came with your phone and try the process again.
I spent a whole night troubleshooting a very similar issue on my S3 and the cable change worked.
I was using a Blackberry cable and swapped to Samsung and it made difference. I will soon post the forum link for this issue i am talking about.

- Enable USB Debugging option from the Android Development menu. This is a very important step and without this option enabled ODIN will not flash the new firmware.

How is the OP supposed to do this when they can't boot the phone?? Having this option ticked would make no difference flashing a firmware from Download mode
