It's from Fairbuy. It's a euro unbranded one and it shipped out of Hong Kong.

Not knowing any better, I didn't expect updates away from country of origin.

Hmm, your only option then is probably to do what others above have recommended, or wait for an update to come through. 4.0.4 isn't too bad unless you want the cutting edge features like multiview

Yeah I see there is not too much difference between ICS and JB. I guess I was thinking of upgrading as a status thing.
When you say "wait for an update to come through" do you mean thru Kies or on the system update screen? I ask because Kies won't support updating on that phone.

I'm starting to chicken out of this whole thing. The more research I do the more conflicting info I get.

I have a copy of Odin 3 v1.8 and a UK 4.1.2 ROM I got from GP forums on a thread about Unrooting and putting your phone back to stock for warranty purposes.

It seem like its as simple as connecting the phone, entering download mode, flashing the image and waiting for it to reboot? If it doesnt work you have to clear cache and hard reset which wipes data.?

Assuming all goes well do all your apps and settings (modem, data etc) survive?

It's the "what if it doesn't work" bit about all this that I'm worried about...

Anyway, thanks to all of you for taking time out to reply to my inane questions. I'm not a dumb guy, I fix planes for a living but IT stuff freaks me out. Not enough oil and grease for my liking.

1. There is a huge difference between ICS and JB.

2. It really us very difficult to turn your phone into a brick and even if by some chance you do manage it then there are ways to fix it.

3. Flash counters and the like on your phone can be reset for warranty purposes.

4. As a self-proclaimed 'noob' stay away from AOSP based ROMs like Cyanogen. They are great for those who love to customise their phones and want some more power features but you lose a lot of stock features. Also the Touchwiz nature thing Samsung have going on is one of the nicest Android skins.

5. Backup all your info before flashing with Odin. It is always best to do a factory reset when upgrading. This app is what you want: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup

When flashing with Odin, provided you don't change any of the options you can't go wrong.

Correct. Any official ROM from sammobile will work (Eg. the one I linked to). If you flash over your current ROM you shouldn't lose any settings either, but you will get the benefit of the ROM for you network (if you use that), as well as any future updates for that product code.

My phone happily went from AU unbranded (XSA), AU Vodafone 4.0.4, back to AU unbranded 4.0.4, Poland 4.1.2 (Was the first one to release), Factory reset back to AU unbranded 4.0.4 with OTA updates back to 4.1.1.

I kept it on XSA 4.1.1, but 4.1.1 killed it (Sudden Death Syndrome). Wish I had done the 4.1.2 upgrade!

SUCCESS!!!!

THANKS YOU all so much for your help.
It all seems so clear now that I have done it, it went really smoothly. The only thing was rebuilding all my menu screens etc which was actually fun and now they are totally different to how I had them before, and better.

It is like that in real life too! There is always anxiety with the first time!

I used to get the heebies with new devices but Android is now so mature and the development community so deep that there is very little risk of bricking stuff these days.

I agree its pretty simple now and some great people on the likes of XDA that do a lot of work to make things work better and keep us flashers up to date with whatever is new.
