You don't have to have a reason, or backup information, or anything. "I bought this phone less than a year ago, it wasn't dropped or gotten wet, now it doesn't work. I'd appreciate if you could have it repaired, or replace it, please".

When mine got SDS, Odin mode showed:

ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME:
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom

My understanding is this is beacuse the NAND was corrupt and it couldn't read the product name or system partition therefore it defaults to 'SYSTEM STATUS: Custom'.

In your case, it certainly does 'appear' that the phone has, at some point, been rooted. HOWEVER, this has been known to happen when a legitimate software update has failed. It may have even happened at SSCNZ when they have tried to fix it with a reflash, and it has failed.

timmmay: It's within one year. Take it back to warehouse stationary, ask nicely for a refund or replacement, if they say no go straight to small claims court and file a claim.

They have every right to send the phone away for assessment, and would likely do this.

It would then go to the service agent again, so at the end of the day you are wasting your time doing them.

I think the OP needs to contact the service agent and mention they believe the phone is suffering from SDS and ask them to investigate further, ask them to look into what ever service bulletines they have regarding this.

Of course, the plebs working in a stationary store can't fix phones. They'll send it away, if it comes back anything other than fixed you say "it wasn't fixed", if they're not co-operative then you go to small claims.

Businesses need to take responsibility for the products they sell.

I had mine go to the place in Albany for repair as it is freezing all the time and you have to power it off to get it into a responsive state again, it came back yesterday and all they had done to is is flash the firmware and reset the phone and saying phone is now ok.

After using the phone for 5 minutes the same problem re-ocured (installing the updates for the bundled google apps) and withing 20min it had happened 3 times.

After that I don't hold out much hope for their knowledge or testing of the devices.

There is another thread on here that goes into details of exactly how this can happen.

Thanks for all of your posts! To be fair to Warehouse Stationery, I initially willingly took up the mantle with Samsung customer care myself after the decline warranty from the service agent, because it seemed pointless to try to relay a reasonably technical story via a completely non-technical stationery store worker - but then I was also assuming that by doing so I would be engaging in a two-way conversation with a reasonable person and that as a result it would just be resolved. So this morning I gave Samsung Customer Care (it grates me to call it that) two business days to resolve it before I take them to the Disputes Tribunal and Fair Go - with links to this and other relevant forum threads included. Then I forwarded same to Warehouse Stationery, stating that I expected them to go into bat for me as at the end of the day, if this does go to Disputes Tribunal, the liability to me as a customer actually rests with the store. All credit to Warehouse Stationery, they rang me that afternoon and replaced it out of stock, with a new warranty, and have agreed also to get my old phone back and let me send it to a recovery service to see if anything can be retrieved, and they will fight Samsung for warranty later. Meanwhile, from Samsung, I've received in response: another automated message.

I think the problem is samsung, and that they need to clearly admit to the problem, and display it on their support pages. I wonder how many other people are in your situation, but have no idea about the SDS problem. I have seen two people now with the same story about it being sent to a service agent who accused them of tampering with the phones software, which isn't on, when it is a known defect. Otherwise I think samsung need to do a recall on the batches with the fault., as these are very expensive phones that shouldn't have these problems.
Other manufacturers will repair products without fuss on known defects. Apple recently replaced old ipod nanos with a known defect with brand new models. I even had a canon 4 year old camera fixed at no charge, due to a known problem with the CCD, and canon had posted about the defect on their websites support pages.

buy Samsung if you want to flash a something every 6 hours ... its made for that ... buy ... errr ... htc if you don't want to flash - is that a reasonable way of thinking?

Could turn in to a bit of a PR nightmare for Samsung.

Best thing samsung can do is quietly advise their repair centers of the problem symptoms and tell them to replace.

If they keep on going on this track sooner or later the press will pick up on this and run with it and they will be forced in to a very public, very expensive recall.

Agreed. It's taken Samsung just three weeks to turn my attitude toward them from hyper to viper. And I was about to buy myself a Galaxy Note 10.1 as well. No more.
