tchart: Save yourself and them the trouble and buy a decent brand name tablet. If they don't have an SD slot then get an USB adaptor. We have one for our ipad and one for our galaxy tab.

Can you please clarify how you use the USB adaptor on the iPad? I understood that you can only use the Camera Kit, and that is just for importing photo/video from an SD card or camera?

I had the USB camera connection kit for my iPad.  Comes with two adapters, one for USB (connect camera directly via usb cable) and a SD card adapter, that lets you plug in a SD camera card.  Automatically opens 'photos' and lets you choose which specific photos to import (or do the whole lot).

Then asks whether to delete the photos on the card/camera after you have imported all to iPad.

gzt: Bear in mind with iPad you get approx five years worth of operating system and security updates, so you can use most of the latest apps from the app store and you really will get five years use out of it.

How can you claim this?  The first iPad was released three years ago and stopped getting OS updates last year

Bought an ASUS Pad for parents-in-law, with the keyboard/dock. The keyboard ads an extra battery for a total of almost ten hours of power. Don't want the weight? Take it off the dock and walk away.

Brilliant device, the one we got came with 3G built-in but there's WiFi only option. Easily replace a laptop if the usage doesn't involve specialised tools.

A bit more expensive but a lot more return.

Lol. I can claim it only without evidence ; ). But seriously, there goes my geekzone karma. I was completely wrong without thinking. Thanks for correcting.

Partial source of error - iOS support situation with iPhone is different.

Agree, my 3 year old iPod touch hasn't had any updates for around 12-18 months. Most apps on the app store are no longer compatible.

gzt: Well yes, but the literal translation of "so long as the hardware is capable of running it" is "when Google decides it is not financially rewarding to backport it".

Google are not as bad as the OEMs, at least. The Nexus One was retired from updates because its GPU was too weak to handle the new display compositing in Android 4.0. The Nexus S is a bit odd as it was technically capable of running the latest update, but maybe it ran a bit slow. My wife's phone, which has very similar hardware, is very sluggish on Android 4.2. Almost unusably so.
gzt: Apple: Around five years if you buy the latest model.

Apple are currently sitting at around 3 years for iOS updates. However, old devices often miss out on new features (e.g. Siri), and 2+ year old devices tend to be a bit sluggish with the latest updates.

Apple are definitely a lot better than their competition, but they're far from perfect.

You should buy them an iPad (Even though personally I would loathe to have one). If you can't afford to get them an iPad then don't buy them a tablet.

My parents currently have an Asus Tranformer with keyboard dock, I think they would of been much happier with an ipad or a small netbook/laptop. If you must go android (which I don't recommend for parents) then don't go any cheaper than the Nexus 7.

You seem to be right there. My parents-in-law are having a hard time adapting to a tablet. Even though they have an ASUS TF 3G with a docking/keyboard they are completely lost.

I recently recommended a Sony Xperia S tablet for a cousin. It was $399 at the Sony store which is a very good deal for a name brand quad core tablet

Looks like a nice device. He is not a tech savvy person but uses a PC all day and a laptop. He wanted something portable to mail, surfing and reading PDF's (case files). The SD slot in the Xperia was a winner there since it can take a 32GB card and he can store tons of his case files on it.

I said I would help him set it up but we haven't met up yet so either he's lost or he found himself around it. His wife has an iPad but I didn't recommend that because of its closed nature and cost.

Cousin that uses laptop+c every day =/= Parents :)

I strongly think buying android tablets for parents are a bad idea.

That's a very perjorative statement. Parents are people (!). What we are assessing really is their technology capability.  Assess the person before making the judgement.

Cousin = people , parents = people, cousin = parents

Interesting logic, I'm sure the 5% of technologically adept parents will applaud your advocacy.

PS. It's "pejorative"

I blame the poor spell checker in this forum software.

Don't blame anything on this forum software. We don't have spell checkers. It's your browser.
