Right.....

1. Unlock bootloader - check
2. Root the phont - check (took some messing about with as both Unlock Root and SuperOneClick kept coming up with error messages but got there in the end)
3. Installed Titanium Backup and Root App Delete - got rid of all the chinese apps

No luck finding CWM for the G510 - not keen on installing manually. Will look at following Part 2: Step 1 on this link:

I had a look too and couldn't find CWM, but did find a TWRP recovery. I haven't used TWRP myself, but it is supposed to install CWM zip packages.

TWRP should also make use of the touch screen, which will make it easier to use than trying to navigate with the volume and power buttons.

Thanks but I found this link which seemed a little easier:

Just download the package, copy the apk across, change the rw-r-r settings and viola, it all worked

Everything seemed to work fine and I spent the afternoon tweaking the setup, downloading apps and stuff that I figured the owner would like and use.

She came around to pick it up - I demonstrated how to use it. Then showed her the camera and get a "camera unable to connect error"!

d'oh!
