^ interesting read, the Chuwi sounds really good!! I don't like that the Chuwi & Onda are 4:3, but this is only because watching videos is an important feature to me.

I ended up going for the Pipo S1s, looked around pretty hard but could find nothing which could beat it in the sub $100 range, and is quite well specced too (as it has only very recently been released I assume).

Drat, kinda regretting now I didn't spend a bit more and get this phablet as a phone upgrade instead of that tablet which I just purchased:

I was taking a look through Aliexpress just now for a US$200ish or cheaper phone with a 5 inch or bigger screen, 720P or better screen, MTK6589 CPU, and 2gig of ram (is the performance boost between 2gig and 1gig significant?).

These seem to be at first glance to be the top contenders:
