ALTRON: http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/26/htc-one-google-play-edition-hands-on-video/

"The phone is factory unlocked with quad-band EDGE, tri-band HSPA+ (850/1900/2100MHz) and quad-band LTE (700/850/1700/1900MHz)."
No 1800 LTE... but 700MHz is available for one day. (is it even the same kind of 700MHz nz will be using? )

The US 700Mhz band plan is not the same as what will be used in NZ 700Mhz APT band plan

So does that mean that under the 700mhz band, there are several other "sub bands " like 710, 720, 740 and it depends on the carrier what they chose to go with?

So a manufacturer has to come with variants of a model specific for their regional markets to cater for their frequencies?

Google LTE band plan and have a look not all 700Mhz is the same

It's confusing when people use the MHz instead of the band numbers. NZ will use band 28, whereas Verizon and AT&T in the US use 13 and 17 respectively (and by just reading "700 MHz" you can't tell which of those two providers it's compatible with!)

:( Just read on XDA that Samsung and HTC will still be responsible for OS updates not Google so updates could well still be delayed as we have become acustomed to with Android and its fragmented world

This allows for control over proprietary drivers = no AOSP/CM love

I'm guessing that it'll come to about $1050 with all the taxes etc.

Because i have a multi-currency debit card i dont get converstion fee's but you may depending on the bank  and card type.

I got the Acer C7 Chromebook($199USD) and Samsung Galaxy S 4($649USD)

and that was what was charged to my card. but if converted i think it'll be about $1000 (estimate) for both

Lame, kinda defeats the the point then.. still relying on the manufacturer for updates.

It'll be about $954 for the S4 and $254 for the chromebook making a total of around $1208.

langers1972:

From Droid life....

We reached out to Google PR to get some clarification on the subject, and have news that you should have expected from the beginning. Actually, this is essentially what Google told us from day 1, when they first announced the “Nexus experience” phones. Updates will be timely, as Google will work directly with HTC and Samsung.

This is what Google told us:
On background, we will be working very closely with Samsung and HTC on future software updates for these devices and they will receive software updates shortly after a new version is released.
So there you have it. Whether they are coming directly from Google or not, they have committed to supplying updates “shortly” after new versions of Android are released.

No one is saying the updates will definitely be delayed, but they might not be received as timely as the Nexus handsets given the OEM's provide the updates not Google and their track record is err... fragmented :P

I have been running the S4 Play edition rom on my i9505 purchased here. After 3 days I switched back to the stock samsung firmware. I can't see what the fuss about pure android is... It kind of sucked, didn't even have a rotation lock toggle! The only benefit I could see was being able to use google wallet without any hacks or patches.

Before anyone else imports from the US play store, is it really worth not having LTE? You could pick one up here for around $800 NZ now, and have a warranty. Just some things to consider..

I dont quite like the Samsung stock firmware ( the fonts , styling look etc ) Can you please advice how easy it is to stick the pure edition ROM on top of a standard samsung S4 bought here.

OR if there is a link to do it, ur help will be appreciated :)

Have you any experience with flashing custom roms before?

I downloaded the Play Edition rom from:
http://www.sammobile.com/2013/06/28/install-android-4-3-on-your-galaxy-s4-gt-i9505-ported-from-google-play-edition-gt-i9505g/

The rom isn't Odin flashable, so you need to install it using a custom recovery (have the rom copied onto your micro sd card). I used Philz touch recovery, but there are others you can use. Philz touch recovery is Odin flashable, which makes for a very easy install.

Philz touch:

If all that didn't really make any sense, head over to xda-forums, find the i9505 forum and do a bit of reading. It took me a couple of days to get my head around all the jargon etc, but found it's the kind of thing you learn by doing.
