sbiddle: Online topups are a bit of a nightmare for any ticketing system. They can only work if you're going to then be passing through a ticketing barrier that has connectivity so the card can be updated with the balance. This can't happen on a bus because it doesn't have realtime connectivity.

Really? How hard is it to do 3G data?

3G data would probably work fine (most of the time) BUT the biggest barrier would probably be cost. It would cost a fortune to roll out 3G to all of the fleets in addition to the new snapper gear, and the ongoing costs of running 100's of busses sending and receiving data constantly would be high (Every bus would need to download every top up made)

huckster: There was a Snapper Android App.....? Nice marketing. Was fed up with having to find a dairy every week or so. Too late now.

Be aware.... as far as the AT HOP is concerned, "A top-up fee does not apply to Auto Top-Ups online"

Couldn't STAND having to do this every top up! Only a single store that did top ups in my area.

I originally heard the Snapper app was only for 2Degrees users, but gave it a try anyway (on Voda) since I have NFC. So convenient. Tend to just top up while at the bus stop if I need to.

On another note, this app is great if you bus in Auckland. So much better than the official AT app (which doesn't even allow you to 'save' a bus stop).

I have heard that AT Hop DOES have 3g and in fact this is the reason for the delays in the latest rollouts... the 3G units kept dying in testing for unknown reasons...

That would make sense.

You're rolling out NGC readers - they must have some form of connectivity built in.

The ones on the Ferry terminal certainly don't look like they have wired connectivity.
